Lek Lim Nonya Cake Confectionery @ Bedok North

Word of mouth is a lethal weapon. Case in point: After the shiok dinner at 85 Fengshan Center, Dad mentioned there was a famous Ang Ku Kueh somewhere near. With my interest piqued, I had to find it, even if it meant asking the stall owners. When I did, it was closed for the day. The petshop owner next door quipped, "They open as early as 5am and close by noon." That's two verbal affirmations and the invisible power of "closing before noon."!

I had to try them and cooked up every possible reason excuse to visit 85 Fengshan Center again. I suppose I must have bugged my parents so hard, they appeared on the dining table for breakfast!

Of the four flavours excluding coconut, the Mom picked out the next top 3.

Yellow Bean

Priced at 50 cents each, it's real friendly on the pocket, possibly the cheapest around. Visually pleasing, these bright coloured kuehs are shaped like mini mountains, taller than the usual flat ones. The skin is a tad too thick and bland, very separate in taste even when eaten together with the fillings. The ang gu kueh somehow did not gel together. Of the three, I liked the yellow bean best. The peanut was too crumbly, dry and stiff.

Ji Xiang at Evertons is still tops for the best Ang Ku Kueh.
