Tan's Tu Tu Coconut Cake @ Food Republic, Vivocity

I honestly hardly pay attention to this particular kueh tutu pushcart at Food Republic in Vivo, mostly brushing it aside as an overpriced hawker snack given that it is located in Food Republic and Vivocity. Kueh Tutu's one of those snacks I grew up with, they used to be ubiquitous at every masar malam. They still are but the pasar malams seem to be getting fewer. Until a colleague shared them with me over tea one day did I realise how awesome they are!

A quick google unearthed the history of Tan's Tu Tu Coconut Cake! The first stall was opened in Havelock road and they've been around for quite some time now.

Hidden in a corner..you can't quite miss the queues!

Nostalgia at its best. Watching the auntie's nifty fingers move with such speed leaves you quite in awe, pretty much rivalled the xiao long bao chefs in Shanghai. The steps get quite hypnotic after a while, coat the mould with a thin layer of kueh tutu flour, fill in the stuffings and smooth it with another layer of flour, leave to steam and ta-dah! Move too fast, the kueh breaks apart. Wish they practised some QC here, ended up with a dismantled kueh tutu en route home.

Choices of fillings include fragrant peanut or tropical shaved coconut. Am not quite a coconut person so peanut they all were! Pretty flower kuehs, frivolously fluffy yet with bite. Get 10 and you get them stored in a styrofoam box, if not it's a flimsy plastic packet to go. Another must-buy each time I drop by the foodcourt!

Between the famous putu piring and kueh tutu, I'm still sticking to the latter!
