The HandBurger @ Raffles City 2

Special thanks to Anna from the management of Soup Spoon and Handburger for kindly inviting me back after the feedback I gave a couple of months back. In a span of a couple of months, a couple of visible changes were made. For one, their signage is more obvious now! New items have been added to their menu, think lunch and tea specials!

The plates waiting to be filled.

Duck Confit Burger ($17.80)

No wonder reviews have nothing but praise for this. At slightly under $20 after the taxes, this is HB's priciest. I've not tried Duck Confit but this reminded me of braised duck with soggy skin.

This is quite irrelevant but our choice of chilled stuffed tomato resulted in a tomato overload. Every mini burger came with a thick chunk of tomato. The stuffed tomato's quite a surprise on its own, cutting open to reveal coleslaw that could do with ton more mayo or in my case, I dunked quite a bit of spicy mayo into it. On its own, it is rather tasteless.

Threads of meaty delight, I should really try a proper Duck Confit to do a comparison.

A variety of sauces are available, one thing though...remember to ask!

Sliders (Choice of 4, $12.80), only available from 3-6pm

This set of sliders suits me perfectly, having my burger and chomping it without having too hard of a decision to make. At one glance, you get to taste 4 different miniatures from the menu. After tasting all four, I wish they gave the option of duck which is more outstanding than their beef burgers. The buns were delicious though, with multigrain and cornmeal thrown in to give it more bite.

Beer-battered Dory Slider
Beer Battered Pacific Dory Fish , topped with spicy tartare and renkon (lotus root) crisps on a bed of coral lettuce, tomato on a toasted honey wholewheat multigrain bun.

The dory fillet was remembered to be firm, not much of a comment to make here.

Pulled Pork Slider
Slow-cooked fork tender pulled pork slathered with handmade barbecue sauce topped with crunchy mayoless slaw on a bed of coral lettuce, tomato on a toasted rustic cornmeal bun.

Disappointment as this was on the sweet side, which was not quite what I was expecting. Tasted more like rendang consistency.

The Handburger Original
Grilled 100% N.Z. Ribeye beef patty, sweet onion jam, cheddar cheese, handmade barbecue sauce on a bed of coral lettuce, tomato on a toasted rustic cornmeal bun.

Bluecheese Beef Slider
Grilled 100% N.Z. Ribeye beef patty topped with roasted pear, blue cheese, sweet onion jam, cheddar cheese, handmade barbeque sauce on a bed of baby spinach, tomato on a toasted honey wholewheat multigrain bun.

Of the two, the bluecheese was more outstanding for the condiments that came with it. Pears and blue cheese made this tastier. The beef patty had indigestible bits within, tendons perhaps.

Warm Sticky Banana Cake ($5.50)
Sticky Banana cake served warm with vanilla soft serve ice-cream drizzled with strawberry sauce

Marmalade Pantry did good propaganda with their signature sticky date pudding, whether or not it created legions of fans. At least it's on the top of a diner's mind when 'sticky dessert' is mentioned. I fell for the trick with a mere glance of description. Naturally, when it was served the initial expectation gave way to disappointment. Seemed quite like a deconstructed dessert, save for the bananas baked in the cake. Sticky was nowhere found in this dense banana kueh served warm. Once again, the soft serve ice-cream was nothing more than Mcs ice-cream. The berry compote was a thick huge splatter on the plate.

Beef burgers at HB still do not quite work for me though credit has to be given for the vast improvement in terms of taste and bite from the first impression. Definitely, the change in type of beef from lean sirloin to slightly fatty ribeye gave the beef patties more taste and juice.
