The Handburger @ Raffles City

The Handburger was featured in Urban and somehow the eye twinkled at the special mention..so that was it for dinner one of those gf nights. Raffles City is still undergoing changes in its food directory, Ocha Ocha has since been vacated, Anthropologie gave way to The Handburger and Osaka Town...yay for the foodies. This is located right next to The Soup Spoon, strategic move as it is started by the folks behind TSS.

Funny how you cannot quite find the signage but those in the know would know!

At 6-ish pm, the place was relatively quiet. Menus are in the style of clipboards and illuminated signboards. Long tables fill the place, more suited for a quick meal rather than a proper gathering.

The rows of bread staring so enticingly at me.

The clipboard menu!

Complimentary bowl of chips (Taro, Potato and Yam) which would otherwise cost $3.80. Pity these were not hot nor warm, tasted freshly out of an opened bag of chips with the BBQ Sauce dip.

Headed for The Works Burger ($17.90) over the Original...the mentality is, just give it the best shot and head for the mega weight. There is a promotion however for The Original Burger, every order gets you a free mini milkshake.

The sweet potato fries that came with it were good though. There is a choice of a bun, fries or a stuffed tomato. Do ask for the other sauces if required, if not they just serve a standard BBQ sauce for all items. The Original and The Works are the only two beef selections, the rest are goose, duck, chicken and vegetable.

The burger took quite awhile to reach but when it arrived, the looks did not disappoint. A towering burger with so many layers; caramelized onion rings, beet, fried egg, stirloin patty, lettuce, mushrooms and cheese with two sides of toasted buns seared over the pan. The buns were warm and delicious on their own. After weeding through the ingredients, it is quite a massive burger. The flavours complimented each other rather well but I found fault with the patty. It is not taste like minced beef, neither was it steak...the texture was interesting with a certain mush consistency. Not quite a huge fan of my beef tasting this way.

Lemony pot ($5.50) for dessert. Lemon Creme Brulee with an over-torched layer, rendering the sugar too burnt and bitter. The top half of the brulee was overcooked imo, tasted more like a dense cheesecake. The bottom half was runnier and smoother in texture which should be the way creme brulees are! The soft serve ice-cream tasted like Mcs which I could have just popped next door to get a full cone at $0.50. The waiter actually took away our dessert "I'll inform the chef" but the plate was left just at the counter. Of which a waitress came by and quickly defended"I have not tried it but it should be this way, half smooth and half not-smooth..so do you want it back?" She brought back our half-eaten dessert and left me utterly amused and speechless. Really, there should be a better way of service recovery here? No attempt at all on The Handburger's part, apart from brushing it aside and leaving you absolutely dumbfounded with the explanation and actions.

Overall service is prompt..but you have to head over to the counter with your slip to make payment, the very same counter that dispenses drinks so it can be a little overcrowded at times. Taste wise, not overly impressed by the burger nor the dessert..mediocre if not slightly above average at best. For one, Carl's Junior does a meaner burger at a cheaper price, or even Aston's.
