Peranakan Kueh like their other dishes are signature of this group of Babas and Nyonyas.
The Malaysians have voted Baba Charlie the best for kueh and we joined in the fun.
Locating it may not be easy but herd instinct makes it easy. Just follow anyone who walks into the lane.
Almost at the end of the lane is Baba Charlie.
Enter into a room full of kuehs, they get snapped up so quickly, it is barely a case of look and see then buy but just grab whatever that catches your eye.
The colours are so vibrant and each are carefully wrapped in plastic - hygiene checked!
Their family wall - a proud patriach I say, Baba Charlie!
Some of the kitchen action that took place.
I thought it weird that Baba Charlie did not have the boxes branded with his name but instead they issued generic boxes like these.
The stack of goodies we got!
All in one snug box. I wish I could beautifully plate them to photograph but they had such a short shelf life, we had to consume them within the next couple of hours.
Ondeh-ondeh
The paste was too thick and gula melaka too little.
Apam Balik Kelapa
Pasty and dense was what this kueh was all about, I wish I could pinpoint its flavour to something specific.
Spot the Lemper Udang!
In the face of savoury and sweet, I get lost in savoury when it comes to Peranakan kueh. The letdown was the sweet nonya shrimp stuffing that is usually spicy.
The mandatory ang ku kueh. Once again, skin was a tad thick.
Kueh Bolu
I love this version best! Spongey with a bite and not too sweet.
There is a flat price for the kuehs and another for kueh bolu. The thing then is, I was not overly impressed with Baba Charlie's kuehs, a case of having tasted better commercialised kuehs like our homegrown Bengawan Solo.
