Poppies Bistro @ Upper East Coast Road

menu

Poppies Bistro, opened since November 2013, has been serving up unpretentious brunch items almost all day over weekends.

restaurant

Replacing an old school eatery, this new bistro offers a laid back experience. I was first drawn into their red big ass fan that measures 3 meters in diamater. Within earshot, I heard that this is the same as the fans used at our MRT stations - very smart move instead of having air conditioners.

menu

All day promotions.

croque monsieur

Croque Monsieur ($16)
Toasted white bread, shaved ham, gruyere cheese, mustard, bechamel

This croque monsieur is different from the rest, spilling over in cream cheese though I really wish it was thick molten mozzarella cheese. Delightful one lacking in sin and the chips were sorrily bland.

eggs benny

Eggs Benedict ($15)
Shaved ham

Eggs were well executed, muffin held up the egg juice decently, ham was not salty and there were freshly ground pepper to flavour. I suppose the hollandaise got lost in all these and I do not remember even tasting any of it.

pancakes

Blueberry Pancakes ($10)
Maple Syrup

Food styling is not quite their thing since three pieces came lying limp on the plate. These were decently fluffy and very homemade.

juice

Lime Juice ($4)

Their brunch items come with a drink at a top up of $4 instead of the usual $6. Freshly squeezed or not, I cannot tell except that there was a lemon wedge to go with my juice.

sangria

Sangria ($14)

A perfect perk me up on a weekend, not too lethal not too light. This is how life should be on vacation mode.

mac and cheese

Mega Baked Mac and Cheese ($20)
Mushrooms, cheese sauce

Great for sharing, this creamy macaroni and cheese was light and easy to polish off but if we did not order so much this would be just nice.

Poppies is as laid back as they claim they are, food is not top priority somehow. Room for improvement!
