Swa Garden, another of those famous grand old dames in Teochew Cuisine but I have not realised till today. Dialect cuisines are a gem these days with most dominated by the Cantonese. So then get transported to an era where honest cooking prevailed.
At least more hygienic than wet towels!
Pots of nomnomity.
Shark's Fin with Crab Meat
I think having Shark's fin soup in a restaurant is an extravagance and this proved to be worth the splurge. Thick fins in the gooey tasty soup more than made up for it - and not losing to the top notch restaurants one bit.
Five Variety Cold Dish Combination
This would give every other wedding cold dish combination a run for its money - in its generosity and variety, I was just stoned for a good while. Personal favourites went to the jelly fish in thai sauce and prawn balls.
Steamed Sea Bass
I have to admit the Teochews do their steamed fish best. Flavourful broth with enough oomph to make this seafood a gem of its own.
Teochew Braised Goose
Fret not about missing goose in Hongkong, here's an equally delicious alternative. Almost like braised duck, only more tender. One thing's missing out is the braised egg to make it more complete.
Fried Prawn Balls
This should have been a prawn dish that they sold out on. Made with whole fresh prawns, this crusty delight was hard to resist and really tasty too.
Double Boiled Chicken Soup
I usually scoff at having two soups in one meal yet not this time. A herbal concoction with chicken chunks and ginseng - as hearty as that sounds, we all welcomed our second serving of soup.
Double Mushroom with Spinach
Heavy on flavour, the vegetable dish stood out for its well executed spinach - nary the biting sensation on my tongue.
Fried Noodles with Scrambled Egg
Yet another stunning number - fried noodle without any of the grease. Two thumbs up!
Sweet Yam with Gingko Nuts
In true teochew tradition, orh nee to end of the meal. This has to be the best orh nee in town - smooth yam paste with grated yam bits. Double the sin but triple the joy.
Shame on me for not discovering Swa Garden any earlier - expect rough but attentive service and cramp environment but good food without a wait, this is worth a visit!
