The first purple velvet cake at Spruce was so
unforgettable, it sparked off the interest in the original red velvet
cake. There are tons of renditions of what goes into a red velvet cake –
some have said cocoa with red colouring, others
term it vanilla and chocolate flavouring. No matter which version, I am
completely head over heels, heart of mind, body over soul in love with
it. If pink is the new black red velvet is the new carrot cake.
Cedele ($6)
I tend to place cedele cakes under the category of
wholesome, mainly because of their ingredients used – organic which
results in a rougher than usual texture.
Their red velvet at Great World
City was soggy, rough and all off unpalatable.
The red velvet could have gotten lost in all that was going on, it
could pass off as any other flavour. The cream cheese frosting was
delectable, thankfully frosting saved the day! Reviews have suggested a
varying standard across outlets and that I truly concur.

Ordering it full meant a moist and brilliant display of what red velvet should be - gone vegetarian. Beetroot is a superb replacement of cocoa.

Twelve Cupcakes, $3.20
Hey Cupcakes!
Hardly rich and well, I cannot help but keep comparing with Twelvecupcakes.
Burger Barn ($8), The ARC
At $8 a slice, this had to be one pricey cake but an equally tall one to match. Even with clearly defined layers, it was fell on the taste test to determine how good it is. A mistake on the baker's to use a combination of dry and moist layers that caused the stark contrast when eaten.
Red Velvet ($2), The Soup Spoon
Price played a large part for this. Artificially sweet cake layers with the mildest trace of cocoa and the buttercream was a huge letdown. Old school much which does not quite sit well in the modern day cake-scape.
Red Velvet ($35), Melvados
Coloured too light and tooth achingly sweet - I wonder how this can pass off as a wholesaler for cakes.
A complete miss!
