Bad Apples - Apple Desserts

Apple dessert like sticky date puddings and molten custard paus are irresistible. Yet the number who make it tops and outshines all others is far and few. To even get to the creme de la creme is a series of trial and error experimental eating..here's just a few that I have struck off the list for good.

I love my apples - whether fruit or infused into a tart, crumble, pie...what have you!

These were eaten over a span of time so I'm not sure if they are still on the menu.

Apple Mille Feuille, Bakerzin Northpoint

Bitter apples made this hard to stomach and comprehend. The kitchen shirked the responsibility to the caramel sauce used to caramelise the apples. Pastry was too flaky for my liking, bitter apples and vanilla bean icecream..I simply was not wowed.

Apple Crumble ($11), Hog's Breath Chijmes

Supposedly homestyle and "better than what your Mom used to make" - I agree right down to the presentation and taste. The dessert is mostly soggy apart from the crumbles. The sorriest bit of it had to be the obviously melted vanilla icecream which the kitchen so generously decided to plonk another scoop of icecream on top of the melted one. That leaves me with a soggy crumble, a not so artistically positioned whipped cream and two scoops of icecream. All in a mess.

And while there are bad apples, there are of course good ones.

Apple Crumble ($3.10), Savoury Fare

While it looked all of dry and unappetizing, this crumble held up quite well – thick apple chunks, delicious crumble and barely soggy tart base! One pleasant surprise. I look forward to more treats from Savoury Fare, one bakery I grew up with!

The quest continues to find the worst apple dessert around - at least, it helps you avoid it the next time you see it on the menu! For the record, my favourite Apple Tart at Marche has been removed from the menu - why oh why! Devastated much.
