The first wedding of 2012 was held at Pin Si
Restaurant at Yishun Safra. For starters, I never knew of the existence
of Yishun Safra, much less Pin Si. Nonetheless, open heart open mind about it..and possibly be open to surprises.
Braised Fish Maw and Crab Meat Thick Soup
Strangely, we all thought it was shark's fin. Crabmeat chunks made this really hearty.
Steamed Grouper with Crispy Garlic
Fresh with steamed garlic, this was fresh and pretty good.
Golden Suckling Pig
Golden Suckling Piglet, I’d say. Still a welcomed addition at the table – which wedding dinner gets you one full pig or piglet roasted and staring at you in your face? This happens to be Pin Si’s specialty as well. Loved the crisp skin, crazy addictive fats and roasted meat. Slice after slice, the pig was polished off with such ease and guilt. Oh, what a paradox but good food’s always so hard to resist!
Crispy Garlic Chicken
Crispy garlic chicken? A swopped twin perhaps though it barely tasted like one, neither did it look like it. The yellow tints made it so old school yet surprisingly tender and flavourful. As if they soaked the chicken in brine to achieve such even marination. Lovely!
Braised 8 heads Abalone with Mushroom
Decent vegetable dish, this usually comes with cabbage if not spinach.
Five Treasures Deluxe Combination
The cold dish is such a universally recognised wedding dish, it would be odd if it did not appear. Nothing to yell about.

Lotus Leaf Fried Rice and Dried Scallop
For once, I did not succumb to being overstuffed from the multicourse wedding dinner and get floored by the time it hits the carb course. Defined wok fried grains with preserved sausages, this was one well executed dish. Saving the best for the last? Seemed so.
Double Boiled Bird's Nest with White Water Chestnut Paste and Egg White
Stole the thunder from all the other dishes indeed. Bird’s Nest was not top notch but decent enough for everyone to have their share of it. Water chestnuts gave this a lovely crunch.
Pin Si joins the ranks of Peach Garden and Red Star for old school wedding but who really cares if the door gift is yet another set of salt and pepper shakers or coasters? It amused me getting a stack of play cards. More than decent wedding food with spotty service but I would prefer a slow auntie who knows how to dissect fish than a fast handed part timer who ruins a beautiful fish with all that crazy massacring. Yes, I have attended wedding dinners at top hotels and ended up with my fish chopped up beyond comprehension. Once again, fulfilling the hypothesis that food at restaurants do taste better than certain hotels.
