Seah Soon Teck Teochew Porridge @ Changi Road

Special thanks to Alvin for the invite!

seah soon teck teochew porridge

Teochew cuisine is easy to like, though being Cantonese it overthrows all the strong flavours and rich food we are so used to. There are a number of teochew porridge stalls that have stuck with me through the years - one near Dunman Food Center.

seah soon teck

The coffeeshop with just one food stall.

You either go teochew porridge or cai png.

drinks

They had a range of bottled herbal concoctions, they were a tad watered down though.

Orange Oil and sesame seeds?

sesame seeds and oil

Great fun watching the oil roll over the seeds rather than soaking up.

sauces

The other sauces to go, special mention goes to the power of a chilli paste.

3 signature dishes (Pig Trotter Aspic, Shark Meat Aspic, Braised Duck)

shark meat

Shark Meat Aspic

These thickly cut shark meat slices were dense and fresh. The other attempt at it was at Chinatown's. Keeping it iced also retained its firm bite. Two thumbs up! Liked the dipping sauce of plum sauce and sesame seeds.

aspic

Pig Trotter Aspic

Hardly stalls get this so right - the right proportion of jelly and meat. Most stalls have too much meat.

braised duck

Braised Duck and Peanuts

Braised to such tenderness and full flavour, great pairing with porridge!

clams

Chilli clams

On the sweet side and a pity this was not served piping hot.

stingray

Stingray

Somewhat fishy and lacking in taste.

head

Steamed Black Fish

I and steam fish are not completely best of friends nor arch enemies yet on my own will not take the initiative to order it. Temperature was well controlled and fish was really fresh.

black fish

The meat was absolutely tender and nary a bite of staleness. Without any marination, this was outstanding.

fishcake

Handmade Teochew Fishcake

Fishcakes are not quite my thing though meatballs are - I simply love my meat where I can see it, just like arm and foot candies. That being said, the blended fish paste and woven in pork bits were delish, every bite had pork. My kind of fishcake!

cai buey

Cai Buey

These was sold out and cooked on the same day hence the lack of flavour and somewhat undercooked.

intestines

Braised Pig Intestine

Once again, never a fan of innards and I enjoyed my first dish of intestines at Ay Chung's. These are brilliantly made with intestines without a whiff of stench nor taste of gameyness..best part of it, meat is carefully woven into each intestine roll. Intestines are the new foie gras.

assorted veg

Stewed Vegetables

Expectedly soft and mushy.

Having opened barely 3 weeks back, Seah Soon Teck Teochew has shifted so many occasions, the loyal following would have waned out by now. It used to be just doors away from the ever popular Teck Teochew Porridge stall near Dunman Food Center.
