mooshi bakes

The latest to join the bandwagon of all day brunch is Mooshi Bakes. It shares the shop space with Awfully Chocolate and the sunday brunch crowd was nothing but sparse.

interior

Filled with babies, kids, teens and adults, the clientele spans across generations. Afterall, chocolate is quite the generation pleaser.

Menu is extensive with a selection from Awfully Chocolate, specifically for chocoholics who can stomach chocolate in the morning. I thought the menu selection is pretty close to Loola's only more focused on crepes. Otherwise, items like crab souffle and french toast with lemon custard seemed the same.

another shot

The Really Big Breakfast ($22)
Bacon, sausage, eggs, grilled tomatoes, sauteed mushrooms, handmade sour dough

Fit for a king, quite nearly. The spread of ingredients made me smile from within. I opted for scrambled eggs yet this rendition was somewhat too heavy on the whites - I thought scrambled eggs were universally the same in colour. Not that I should be complaining of course but it was just alright. Loved the handmade sour dough, crunchy with soft insides. The hainanese chicken rice lookalike salsa and garlic sauce were flavourful killers. Sausages were more than decent, at least no chipolata!

Overall a hearty one.

le royale

Le Royale ($21)
Mushrooms, honey baked ham, soft egg, parmesan, cherry tomatoes on organic buckwheat pancake

This is the "Really Big Breakfast" on a crepe. The crepe was not that substantial, too thin infact. The soft eggs thrown in gave this the much needed oomph, the runny egg yolk gave this the goo to soak up all the ingredients. That being said, the crepe was mostly soggy in the center.

al funghi

Al Funghi ($16)
Swiss brown, white button, shimeji mushrooms, cream sauce, parmesan

Love your mushrooms, if not it will be an overload.

bacon and egg

Bacon and Eggs ($18)
Scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, sauteed mushroom

Yet another fit for the hungry.

peanut butter crumble

Warm Peanut Butter Crumble ($9.90)

Vanilla icecream came with this - liked the milky after taste though this was no vanilla bean hand churned icecream. Peanut Butter Crumble was a massive letdown. I love the crumble but disliked the peanut butter curd, almost like kueh and lacking in the familiar buttery and creamy texture.

The main problem Mooshi Bakes has is the operational teething problem of a neverending wait - I'm not sure if it should be classified due to inexperience of the young waitresses or the inefficiency of the kitchen. Most if not all our orders took more than 30 minutes to arrive, at least 2 reminders and another took close to an hour. Same went for dessert, what should not have taken 5 minutes took 15. Cutlery takes near forever to arrive and they needed more prompting than required.

Food is decent yet service is hugely lacking.

I returned soon after to takeaway their desserts for fear of a neverending wait if I were to dine in.

cream puffs

Cream Puff ($3.90)

Deemed the "Power Puff", these freshly made puffs are plumped with fresh cream on the spot. While these chewy choux puffs should be credited for the bite I faulted it on the grounds of sweetened fresh whipped cream. Custard should have been the standard but whipped cream? Unimpressed.

gooey

Gooey ($1.80)

Yet another that claims to be a best seller. Mild cream cheese on top a milder tasting cinnamon bun. I have had better.

banana cream pie

Banana Cream Pie ($6.50)

I had my eye on kaya pie but it was not available. Dang! Anyway this was recommended with the strawberry cheese tart. On second thoughts, it seemed like it was put together with a crumble (from the peanut butter crumble), custard as well and cream from the cream puff.

another shot

For a lack of expertise perhaps, the bananas were too raw and cream was custard. At the very least, the pie base was really good.

Takeaway and dining in were not the best experiences. I have yet to find one compelling dish to return for...yet. Awfully Chocolate not withstanding.

  1. Why the aversion to chipolata? Oh what a pity. Coz the peanut butter crumble and banana cream pie look so guuuu...dddd.

Haven't tried Mooshi Bakes nor Loola's, but I love how moist Awfully Chocolate's chocolate cakes are. I once downed half a 6-inch one in one sitting! *gasp*

  3. @ice: just not a fan of that icky tasting sausage! yea looks triumph taste. :( hhaah, i can imagine...awfully chocolate's desserts are notches higher.

@adel: yeap! seems like all day brunch is a legitimate reason to charge higher prices, regardless the location.

  4. I went recently and have been going back since. Perhaphs it was teething problems because it was excellent when I went and the place was packed. I love that it's open till 1 on weekends. I had the mushroom benedict which comes with one of the best salads i've had (the dressing is to die for) as well as some crispy bacon. They are generous with their sauces; while there was not enough sauce on my plate, upon request, they provided me with extra hollandaise and a side of pesto (not part of the dish) which was absolutely delicious. I admire their generosity with extras (the sauces were both free) and while the prices can be steep, the portions were hearty.
