Senor Tacos @ Chijmes

Tacos and Tequila was the main reason why we ended up at Senor Tacos. Mexican food and I are not best of friends, neither are we arch enemies, it's just one of those that fall in between. Fairly packed for a Friday night, reservations are highly recommended.

The menu is as limited as can be, the food menu probably has a maximum of 10 dishes and given the number we finally attempted - close to trying every single item! Most of the items are repeats anyhow - wraps with a plethora of ingredients or burritos or tortillas. Every item had a floury wrap or shell of some sort.

interior

The interior with a bar and a huge music video screen to match!

nachos

Complimentary bowl of nachos and salsa was served up almost immediately. Mildly salted crunchy corn shells which served as great appetizers. On hindsight, this was perhaps the most unanimously loved dish of the night.

sauces

A choice of 4 sauces with varying degrees of spiciness is offered (sounds almost like Nando's!). The world's hottest chilli was indeed more than very hot.

bottoms up

We started off the meal with a round of drinks - tequila shots ($20 for 2)! There was also frozen margaritas as well. I am no fan of tequila shots after the few ill-fated attempts.

tequila downed

Yet Senor Tacos' tequila shots were easy to down without the nasty aftertaste. Nice!

lemon green tea

Uber pricey drinks at $4.50 a can for that additional wedge of lemon.

crispy beef

Chicharron Ribeye ($25)
Crispy ribeye chicharron in a bed guacamole

crispy beef

This came served in a casserole, fried beef cubes on a bed of guacamole. Rolling it like a popiah, the wrap went quite well with this.

burrito

Burrito ($15)
Classic burrito filled with all the goodies (Chicken, Veggies, Beef)

Thin like paper prata, the burrito was stuffed with cous cous, chicken, salad and cheese. In all the gooeyness, the taste was rather bland though.

tortilas

Barbacoa Arrachera
Northern Mexico slow cooked beef arrachera

Served with tortilla, the slow cooked beef is stewed to tenderness pumped with juices. Decent one here.

seafood

Gobernador ($12)
Prawn, cheese and bell peppers on corn tortilla

In all the cheese and bell peppers, these crystal prawns were unfortunately overshadowed.

chicken avocado

The chicken version which by this time was a massive overload of avocado.

tacos

Tacos Al Pastor ($19.50)
Pork and chicken

These were part of the four combo meals available - comes with a bottle of beer. We had both choices. Adored the tacos here, which were thicker and denser than the normal tortillas.

Avocado is used very generously in Mexican cuisine, a love or hate infact. I probably have not eaten so many helpings of avocado in a single meal before.

Racy backdated music videos were played throughout the meal - from unrecognizable starlets to Shakira.

To be honest, by the end of the meal we were all pretty sick of flour based anything. Too many wraps-tortillas-nachos. Dessert menu was non-existent but they do serve up pretty decent tequila shots!
