Moi Lum Restaurant @ Maxwell Road

moilum

Established in 1920, this authentic cantonese cuisine restaurant has stood the test of time and weathered enough storms to be remembered through the years. Even the parents have eaten there before! CNY booking policies are irking me big time, Moi Lum's included. A 50% deposit is required before the date itself and there were apparently two seatings that we were not informed of. 6-8pm and after 8pm, when our booking was at 7pm.

double booked

Double booked and so crowded.

set for dinner

They somehow managed to squeeze 13 of us too snugly into one table.

chrysanthenum pu er

菊花普洱茶, a first for me and apparently very common in Hongkong! Laced with pu er's bitterness, chrysanthenum's fragrance was hard to miss.

drizzle

Traditional Wolf Herring Raw Fish Yu Sheng

Waitress mumbled a string of what should be properity phrases, she's probably been through too many yushengs to even bother.

mess

The mess we created, one full plate's worth landed on lazy susan - well, if it's a huat year, nobody's going to mind!

yusheng

A tad dry and sweet.

sharks fin

Shark's Fin Soup with Crab Meat

More of a crab meat soup than shark's fin.

greens

Braised Abalone Voluta in Oyster Sauce

鮑魚菇 is probably the closest to the precious 鮑魚, with seasonal greens.

crispy chicken

Majestic Roast Chicken

So famous, even the Dad can remember this signature from decades ago. Arguably the bestest roast chicken around, even triumph's Royal China's big time. And this is during CNY, mind you where food standards are discounted amidst rising menu prices.

Breast meat was a tad bland but a dash of sea salt did wonders, preferred the wings for this! Loved the crispy like crazy skin, indulge without guilt in fact. Two thumbs up!

salted egg prawn

Deep Fried Crispy Salted Prawns

Could not discern the flavour of this crispy one, prawns were fresh though.

broccoli fish

Sauteed Fresh Broccoli with Fish Slices

Broccoli was blanched a tad too soft but fish was really fresh too. Great with rice!

hongkong mee

Wok Fried Noodles in Hongkong Style

Very skewed proportioning of ingredients with some having just noodles and others filled with vegetables and char siew. A different take on boring eefu noodles at least, enough wok hei!

mango sago

Homemade Mango Puree with Mango

I liked the nata de coco used here with mango jelly and mango juice, pretty alright.

Food at Moi Lum is not great, portions are leaning towards the small side. Great for CNY infact, without having a meal that leaves you belly stuffed and mind frozen. Service is horrendously bad and prices are not totally cheap either. They have long been known to be "pricy and average", I guess I shall second that.

$338++ for 10.
