Ember Revisited @ Keong Siak Street

ember!

A revisit to Ember was made possible because of a birthday celebration - else it would have taken nearly an eternity to fulfil for our schedules to meet. Reservations are highly recommended always, with the waitress recommending you to come in before 1215 as that was the peak of the reservations. Even upon entering, head for the menu, make your selections and await the food. Any delay would cause the dish you want to try to be out of stock! (Read on...!) Some patrons I was told make their orders at the same time of reservations and I think I may very well do that the next visit.

love

The walkway outside Ember.

keong siak

Keong Siak Street like Ann Siang Hill and Duxton Hill is particularly intriguing for me...

hostel

The juxtaposition of past and present encapsulated so perfectly, from the alleys to the architecture..

ember

Lunch-a-loving!

bread
Complimentary sundried tomato bread teased the palette big time, particularly adored the crusty edges and chewy insides.

softshell crab

Deepfried Soft Shell Crab with Sweet Wasabi Aioli

It's one deconstructed soft shell crab plated quite nicely. Loved the crispy bits and somewhat soggy bits too - sweet wasabi aioli could do with a stronger punch yet still liked this!

Field Mushroom Soup with White Truffle Oil

Still as outstanding as before, bread-dipping good!

tenderloin
Pan-roasted USDA Prime Beef Tenderloin with French Fries, Merlot Reduction

Only one portion was left by the time we fickle pickles decided what to have. What a pity as I was also eyeing the tenderloin. No need for introduction, this tender one wowed us all over again.

fries

Loving their fries and dip!

duck confit

Crispy Duck Leg Confit with new Potatoes, Caramelized Onion - Thyme Jus

I would admit this has to be one of the better duck confits eaten - mild on the salt and firm to bite. Oh yes, crispy skin included! Wholesome much!

yumm

12 hour-cooked Pork Belly with Savoy Cabbage, Apple Puree and Spiced Calvados Sauce

siobak

Normally 12 hour cooked anything would possibly mean braised and the meat would be falling of the bone yet this was Ember's siobak. Incredibly crunchy pork cackling with meat so flavourful and substantial. Portions were big as well.

testube

This comes with a side of 3 sauces - mustard, sweet barbeque sauce and another that comes from the testube - forgot what though! Goes really well with the siobak.

Apple and pork - perfect marriage indeed. Unbelievably delicious.

pear tart

Crispy Pear Tart with Homemade Baileys Icecream

Once again wowed by the baileys icecream which packed enough punch. The pear tart was equally outstanding with the immensely satisfying crispy pastry.

coconut panna cotta

Coconut Panna Cotta with Gula Melaka, Waterchestnut

A friend insisted I gave this a try and no regrets thereafter. Wobbly like jelly and smooth like custard, this panna cotta was infused with coconut - so very irresistible. The thai accents of red ruby made this even more delectable. Two thumbs up!

chocolate fondant

Warm Valrhona Chocolate Fondant with Vanilla Bean Icecream

The thoughtful folks at Ember remembered to add in a candle for the birthday girl! This chocolate fondant is one of those that has crusty edges with a bittersweet filling. I thought this was one of the better ones, at least the chocoaddict loved it.

camomile

Still a fan of their cookie nibble that comes with coffee or tea.

Once again, thrilled with Ember. Every course was well executed and memorable for me. It's one of those places that I would not feel out of place dropping a fork or engaging in banter with the friendly waitresses. Cannot wait to be back to reignite this love once again - for a start, the company and I have tentative plans to celebrate all our birthdays there in the coming year! That's three visits on the calendar already...yay!

  3. Oooo.. I have been craving for a good duck confit for the longest time, and that tenderloin looks simply awesome! Was it a 3 course set lunch?

ice: If Lay Sian and I are to go Ember, you can be sure that the Chilean Seabass will be her top choice haha.

  5. Oh yes Daniel! Choose the Chilean seabass over the miso cod at Ember. After that, Lay Sian is free to eat the miso cod here hahaha. It's Elaine's favorite too! And the coconut panna cotta please! I thought the chocolate fondant was kinda normal though.
