The visit to Kinki was totally spontaneous and I actually like such spontaneity...without having to plan or read up too much on it. Go with an open heart and mind! Moderately filled for a weekday night, the only tell tale sign of it being a Japanese joint was the group of rowdy Japanese businessmen behind us. I figure it's the salaried men syndrome (even in Japan!) to kill time off work getting themselves stuffed silly and alcohol-ized before heading home in a stupor.
Counter seats! To be fair to the restaurant, I've tried my hardest not to make comparisons to dining in Japan...
The waitress made her recommendations and once again spontaneity struck...we followed suit!
Blue Fin Tuna Maki
Maki rolls stuffed with tuna, literally. I found the rice a tad hard though.
Botan Ebi and Uni Aburi Sushi
Seared spot prawn with sea urchin
Supposedly one of the best selling, I could see no reason why. Loved how sea urchin and spot prawn could be such an awesome combination! The sweet prawn was almost raw with its translucency with a lovely hint of creamy sea urchin...I wish I could have more, if not for the price tag.
Foie Gras and Scallop Sushi
Pan seared foie gras with Hokkaido scallop
Foie gras overshaddowed the scallop which dissolved into nothingness upon consumption. In fact both did, just that foie gras disappeared much faster. I did not fancy the combination too much but I loved the foie gras.
These are bite-sized to be honest...pop into your mouth and it is gone.
U.S. Prime Beef Tataki
Seared U.S. prime grade beef, momotaro tomato and apple-ponzu sauce
Delicious platter.
Tai Capaccio
Easy to get an overkill with a plate so long. Especially with the drizzle of truffle which can be a hate for some. Adored the thin slivers of raw fish which was particularly appetizing.
Oreo Sesame Black sesame ice-cream blended with Oreo cookies ($12)
I was tempted by this served in a martini glass. The black sesame got lost in the oreo iceblend that came with it. Not too huge a fan of this.
I always thought counter seats gave you the opportunity to interact with the chefs but naturally, this was not on the agenda of the chefs as they chose to chat amongst themselves if not busy themselves with the kneading of sushi. A slight hint of aloofness here? Bill came up to $100-ish for two...Pricey affair at Kinki's...a return? I'm not too sure about that.
