Hua Ting @ Orchard Hotel

hua ting

Off to Hua Ting at Orchard Hotel for a regular tai-tai fix...that keeps the sanity in check. I made reservations in advance which proved to be necessary since it was nearly full with dimsum lovers.

artificial lotus

For a moment I thought they were real!

interior

Cushy interior.

towel

Towels rolled up like scrolls.

beancurd skin appetizer

Appetizers ($3.80)

Tasted really like bak kwa, vegetarian bak kwa? Liked the savoury appetizer which is made entirely of  beancurd skin.

roast pork

Roasted Pork ($9)

Still a must. Crunchy skin with a good proportion of meats and fats. The gameyness got a tad strong towards the end but I've got to say, one of the better ones around! This was not found on the menu but we made a request for it.

egg tarts

Egg Tart ($7.20)

Just because dimsum is not complete without them. What a mistake. Not too long ago, Yan Ting's wowed with much aplomp..these were oh-so-sorry.

egg tarts eaten

Flaky pastry with a stiff curd. It was one too many to stomach and there has to be a reason why it's not included in the menu and we insisted on asking for them?

flowy custard

Custard Bun ($4.20)

Think stiff bun with a lovely molten filling. Sediments of salted egg yolk spilled out but I was a tad sore over the pau...totally turned it into disappointment.

molten custard bun

Looks-wise, this was a major major tease! If it did not taste the part, at least it looked the part!

char siew bun

Char Siew Pau ($3.90)

Decent one here!

panfried carrot cake

Carrot Cake ($3.90)

Steamed or deepfried though the latter was recommended. Pan seared, a jab into the cake would reveal shreds of radish...the sort that Mommy dearest could churn out if she had the patience. These days most carrot cakes are high on flour and low in carrot. (sounds hilarious as I type it). Yummy in a homemade way.

siew mais

Prawn Dumpling ($4.80)

siew mai

Siew Mai Scallop Dumpling ($4.80)

More than decent usual suspects.Fresh prawns, no fillers...delectable.

glutinous rice w abalone

Glutinous Rice Abalone ($5.20)

Not sure why but this was chewier than the usual 珍珠鸡s..abalone was wrinkled up slices of topshell. Other than that, it was a substantial one with just the right rice consistency and blend of ingredients.

vegetarian dumpling

Mushroom Dumpling ($4.50)

I never knew vegetarian dumplings could taste so good..at least this one won me over with the lovely crunch of vegetables and smooth skin!

dumpling w chilli

Y-U-M. This triumphed siew mai by a whole yard for flavour.

chicken feet

Chicken Claw ($4)

This gave the gf endless happiness..so I figure it must have been awesome.

dessert

Almond Cashew Nut ($6)

Did not try either but it was wiped out.

Service is an issue at Hua Ting.

First, they take forever to take your order. Apparently only a select handful can do you the honours and even in times of a crowd..you have to wait for your turn to get your order taken.

Second, they forget your order and treat as if it's the most natural thing to do.

Thirdly, the food gets served so pronto, dishes get removed so quickly...the food gets scoffed down so fast...I barely had the leisure and time to savour each item properly..fearing they'd turn cold.

Otherwise, the food is really affordable and tasty.
