Shaslik Restaurant @ Far East Shopping Center

This entry is kinda dated, about the same time (3 months back?) as the Patisserie Launch where the computer went to heaven as did the photos. Anyhow just wanted to remember what I ate!

Far East Shopping Center is hardly a stopover for me in Orchard and in the span of three years this is perhaps the second time I ever stepped into it for a reason, the first was Hob Nob's. Shaslik, it is this time round. Horror aloof stories aside, this place strikes me as old school.

Feels like Jack's Place of yesteryears with the dim lighting, the staff median age is hovering in the region of forties to fifties...expect no warm service, be grateful if you do not get grunted at for blocking their way.

For the umpteenth infinite time, I am a sucker for pushcarts and trolleys and all things nostalgic. Shaslik does a mean job out of their flaming desserts and beverages. I arrived too late to witness the concoction of their famous coffee complete with the lighting up of the glass. A table with castors gets wheeled out, the auntie fumbles with the turning on of the stove, does a swift turning of the pan. Sit back, watch and relax as the florescent flames consume the pan and its ingredients (no matter how ordinary) before it is over. A mini circus of its own that somehow excited the inner child.

Complimentary bun that looked haphazardly torn from the loaf. Slap on churned butter, the dense bun was yumyumyum.

Steak is what they specialise in. Prices start from $25. The steaks come with a side of shredded cabbage drizzled in vinegar. Somewhat oriental but I like it! Classic old school is when your steak gets served on a hot plate with peas and carrots and fries. Steak done medium. Hooray to the right doneness, the lovely pink and juices spilling out. For all the other food establishments who checked for doneness but failed to deliver: SHAME ON YOU! Shaslik does it in style and in such sleekness, I am so sold on their steaks. Tender moments of joy as I thoroughly enjoyed my chunk of steak. It left me scratching the plate for more. Delicious, is just the beginning.

The companion had chicken which obviously paled in comparison. I can only insist on steaks if you ever step foot on Shaslik.

Apart from Borsch soup and Shashlyk Kebabs, Shaslik does not seem to offer the other variations of the authentic Russian cuisine.

Stepping out of this quaint restaurant no longer owned by its original owners or perhaps there is talk that the  standard is a far cry from its heydays, there is a part of me that wishes it would stay for long. For honest, down to earth food, Russian cuisine or not...I already like Shaslik.
