As per tradition and perhaps frivolity's sake, we indulged in rice dumplings this 端午節. Superduper late entry but more so to remind myself not to make the same mistakes twice!
Switched camps from Pine Court to Jade this year, partly because of the Nonya rice dumpling selection. Lovely colours and the beauty ended there. Undercooked hard rice grains ruined the satisfaction of the dumpling. Nothing could be done to save the dumpling unless I wrapped it up to boil in water. Prod further to find a mashed up loose meat-mushroom filling that was sweet, a huge cry from a decent Nonya dumpling with Kim Choo as a benchmark.
Red Vinasse Pork Rice Dumpling (SGD 8.80)
The thing about descriptions is...you give it a name only gourmets are familiar with, the rest are just confused. I, fell under the confused category. Red Vinasse, sounds chi chi? Actually refers to fermented paste. Very acquired. Normally paired with yams and pork, and typically an appetizing dish...I am not sure what it did to the dumpling but what was put forth was pork belly dyed powdery red, the rice was cooked so loose, the dumpling literally fell apart. Bad, bad...all bad. Definitely better than the uncooked dumpling but for a 6 star hotel, it was bewildering.
