Bao Cult @ East Coast Road

Like a girl nursing a crush on a cute guy, the eyes would wander and fixate on Bao Cult each journey home. A peep at the website reveals a slew of innovative paus (cheese and raisin, salmon and cheese...durian too!) and I was already piqued.

Wrapped like a Mos Burger.

Chairman Mao's Braised Pork Bun
Diced pork, quail's egg

Intrigued by the slight orange hint and xiaolongbao-like folds and its interesting name, I tucked into it greedily only to be met by sheer disappointment. Strange combination of pork bits and sauce. The pau and filling were rather detached, strangely.

Melting Gold Bun
Black Gold Bun

Anything molten has a magical hold on me.
Of the two, I preferred the custard egg yolk combination. A nice balance of sweet and savoury.
The black sesame paste was plain chunky and thick.

Molten, quite nearly...but not.

Disappointed from the start to the end, something even the above average fillings could not save. First off, these were straight off the steamer but was lukewarm within minutes. Secondly, the pau had a texture of the instant ones at coffee shops. A great pity, unfortunately...the novelty lasted until consumed.
