Ayam Penyet Ria is plastered all over Lucky Plaza as THE place to have Ayam Penyet despite strong competition from various stalls all over. Queues and several writeups also point to its popularity.
Pempek Palembang ($6.50)
These were like tempura fishcake with egg, topped with dry vermicilli and sweet sauce. Nice start!
Keropok ($1.50)
Addictive, is perhaps an understated word to describe this basket. Crunch-crunch-crunch.
Gado-Gado ($5.50)
Totally floored by this, a simple dish of boiled potatoes and cucumbers tossed in peanut sauce. The savoury peanut sauce made perfect for dipping of keropok. Soggy keropok never tasted so good.
Otak Otak ($5)
A non-spicy version of the usual otak otak I'm familiar with, chewy like fish cake.
Ayam Penyet ($6.90)
And the star of the meal, deep fried smashed chicken with bread crumbs, fried tofu and beancake, cucumbers, kangkong and wicked chilli paste! I suppose the smashing of chicken is literal when preparing this, rendering the meat firmer than usual. I massively love this appetizing dish and would give up ever eating KFC for this.
Es Campur ($3.50)
Es Kacang Hijau ($3.50)
Drinks to begin and round off the tummy-bulging meal. Both were products of haphazard work...but that kind of defines Indonesian cuisine.Throw ingredients in, toss it around and voila. The fruit drink was too sweet and comprised of canned fruit, preferred the green bean drink I had. Potent combination of condensed milk, green beans and coconut milk.
Affordable yummy fare, KFC no more!
Ayam Penyet Ria
#04-25/26 Lucky Plaza
I found Ayam Penyet Ria to be drier and less tender than it was in the past? I thought the Happy Soda was quite a joy to drink haha
ReplyDeletehi harris! you're back from ur trip already? hehe...
ReplyDeletehmm, that was my first attempt at ayam penyet ria...was quite decent for me so no comparison with the past!
I've been there a few months back, and frankly, found it too dry for my liking :(
ReplyDeleteAND they were served cold, so I'm assuming they were pre-fried and left out for a while.
Overheard a few other tables with similar complaints.
hmm...interesting...cos my companions and I actually felt otherwise about it...lack of QC i reckon. Mine was totally opposite from what you both experienced! hehe
ReplyDeletei find mine also dry.. i like the Ayam penyet at Rahiman Chicken house or at The one in Changi Village. to give up KFC.. hmm.. this is a hard decision... hahaha
ReplyDeletehi there! looks like I'm the kind who belongs to the wagon of drier chicken meat...kfc used to work for me before kampung chicken came into the pic.
