Once upon a time, there was a Top 50 Yummiest Cakes ranking. Almost 2 years later I still haven't completed trying all the cakes on the list even after removing the chocolate ones.
Headed to Tampopo to satisfy the scoop cake crave and possibly try my luck.
For the first time, before I could even sit down comfortably, I made an order for the scoop cake. Having to miss another of these would be devastating. I've lost count of the number of times it was sold out.
Scoop cake ($6)
When it arrived, the cake seemed a little stiff...probably due to the chiller's temperature. Even the supposed light fresh whipped cream had already hardened. Not sure if it was due to the edges of the cake served, this was drier than expected. Only one saving grace though, the cake was not soggy despite the cream.
Cheese Chiffon Cake ($5.80)
Comparatively softer than Scoop Cake, Japanese chiffon just the way it should be...light with pockets of air. Trivial as it sounds, I like how bouncy these chiffons are, jab it with a fork and it deflates only for the mere moments before regaining its composure and height. Tampopo does chiffon so right...savoury ones too!
That being said, this did not taste as fresh as Liang Court's, the last I tried. Perhaps it was near to their closing time.
Packed as ever on a weekend, I'll head back to Liang Court for fresher cakes..and cream puffs!

Hardened whipped cream is really bad & I think the chiffon's lost its moisture after staying in the chiller for the whole day. This is never the case when I get mine at the Liang Court outlet. The cakes are always very fresh & moist coz they bake the cakes continuously, especially scoop cake!

yep i should thk liang court's cakes are fresher..heh! I'll definitely go try the deli at your recommendation! :P I honestly wouldn't mind being punished with more cakes either~
