Grandma's @ United Square

With a name like Grandma's, traditional had to be its selling point. The companion excitedly brought me there one evening declaring this the best peranakan food. I hold my horses, usually when he indulges in his interpretation of "best".

Ready for a gastronomical journey...

Nasi Bukhari ($14)
Savoury pilaf-styled rice, succulent prawns, beef rendang, golden brown chicken drumlet

The colours of the dish won me over. This is perhaps the equivalent of Istimewa, fit for a carnivore. Comes with fragrant rice, grilled chicken drum stick, prawn curry and beef rendang. Food that whets the appetite greatly makes eating all the more enjoyable..this, is one of those. I should've ordered a glass of lime juice for a nice, sweet finish.

Beef Rendang ($9.80)

Did not dawn on me that this was a repeat of the sampling portion in the main dish...did not mind it anyway! It's one meaty rendang with spices permeating through every bite, the main grouse is healthy is definitely not on the agenda with the amount of oil soaking through.

Otah ($6.80)

Like the famous cousin in Muah, it's plumped up and fleshy and meaty and...pricier.

Service is not on the top of the list with Grandma's, it is in fact one of the better peranakan places beyond Joo Chiat. Found this on the pricey side.
