Xi De Li @ Tiong Bahru Market

This is probably not the first time and definitely not the last that I will mention how influenced I am by telly food. Certainly does not help that the Mom is an ardent fan of them fried. Every weekly visit to the wet market guarantees a morning snack of some sort. The closest our chinese breakfast gets to Hongkong's version of fried bee hoon and fried dough sticks has to be fried fritters.

Butterfly Bun

Pleasantly surprised that the oil level was well under control, the chewy dough dusted with fragrant sesame seeds. Finger licking good!

Goreng Pisang

A signature that was guaranteed "sweet", I second that! Bananas of the exact ripeness and sweetness with an adequate layer of crunchy batter...sedap!

Tapioca Kueh Fritter

Comparatively, lacklustre despite the equally delightful crunchy batter. The flavours clashed with the tapioca kueh slightly too heavy with the coconut.

Sesame Ball with Peanut

Of the lot, this has to be the greasiest and artery clogging. Did not fancy the thick dull sesame dough, the thick peanut paste was an absolute contrast; rich and nutty.

From 60 cents

I suppose anything deep fried agrees with me, the same way junk food makes me smile like a lunatic. Trans fat is like lard, an unhealthy addiction that makes food taste so good.

What makes a good fried fritter?

The batter. Crunchy with a dash of salt.

XiDeLi's have boxes of their famed batter for sale at its premises. Truly, the batter of their fritters differentiate them from the rest. The hugely satisfying crunchy batter is joyfully not jelard!
