Old Tiong Bahru Market Lor Mee @ Tiong Bahru Market

Eating can be quite a mentally challenging task. I'm usually a decisive eater, unless posed options too many and frustration seeps in.

This visit back to Tiong Bahru Market, I was definite that I would not patronize my favourite Lor Mee stall, so as to be fair to the rest. Tiong Bahru is one of those hawker centers that has multiples of the same dish; think lor mee (at least 3!) and chwee kueh (the last count stood at 2).

Located in a corner, this is easy to miss if you do not look hard enough.

For a start, this looks different from the rest attempted. Resembles thunder tea rice with all the colours and variety of ingredients on top.

Fried fritters in place of shark meat.
Crispy bread crumbs that turned soggy upon tossing.
Slices of meaty char siew, fishcakes and ngoh hiang.

It already sounds like a platter of other dishes instead of Lor Mee.

The bubbles in the gravy from the stirring in bothered me somehow, not that it changed the taste. The tastebuds have been tuned to link crispy shark meat fritters and a tangy broth to a good lor mee. This could have been the original of them all but I was disappointed. The broth was a tad sweet, the noodles were alright but the ingredients reminded me of char siew noodles or even fish ball noodles but not lor mee. Even with extra dashes of vinegar nor spoonfuls of chopped garlic could salvage it.

Back to the usual lor mee stall, unfortunately.
