I've actually walked past Bumbi Bali a couple of times in Ubud but schedule would have it that there was usually not enough time to include it. This visit, we specially paid Nusa Dua a visit just for Bumbu and shame on the traffic, it took us an hour an a half to reach!
Dining is done alfresco style with koi in ponds and traditional music playing on the background.
The colours of the dishes at every meal do such a great job whetting the appetite, I have to give them credit for putting together such a visually attractive spread. Noote, those lemongrass stalks and chillies are only for display, much to my disappointment.
Baskets of crackers and belachan were dished up and replenished so many times before our food was served, keropok truly has a soft spot in my gastro-heart.
Shredded Chicken with Chili and Tomato
Tuna Salad with Shallots and Lemongrass
Pork in Sweet Soy Sauce
Lamb Stew with Cardamom
Crispy Fried Tofu Filled with Minced Seafood (IDR 102,500)
Balinese Style Beef Rendang (IDR 130,000)
Beef, Chicken, Pork, Duck and Seafood Sate (IDR 120,000)
Marinated Grilled Prawns
There were so many plates going around and unfortunately because we had such a stunning meal at Merah Putih the day before, the bar was set for Balinese food. Bumbu Bali is traditional in recipes and flavours even, they ain't complex and infact very straight foward.
Somehow the more complex the dishes, I am drawn to them and this meal at Bumbu did not achieve that.
Coconut, Tangerine, Lime Juice (IDR 30,000)
Watermelon Juice (IDR 37,500)
Seasonal Balinese Fruits that came with the meal and none of which surprised us - I mean why would an Asian be anyway?
I found the place catering more to tourists who'd probably benefit more from their cooking classes than meal per se.
