Our first visit to Hiap Joo was met with closed shutters and the second, wide open doors. In fact, it could be smelt miles off - just kidding on that but the fragrance from such old school bakeries are undeniably addictive. I am literally led by my nose.
It was not smoky, just heaps of wood laid around the bakery with the oven set ablaze.
The menu list with just one item available that day, the infamous banana cake.
Banana Cake (RM 9)
So what lies in this banana cake that sends scores of people knocking on their doors? For once, heritage trumps modernity, the evenness of the banana pulp, sugar, self raising flour and baking powder is unrivalled. Those made by machine or noob bakers like me reveals pockets of uncooked flour in the cake.
Mildly sweet, remarkably fragrant and light, this banana cake is not to be missed!
