Chez Papa, ranked #1 on Tripadvisor, is one Italian place that serves people who love communal dining and homecooked Italian fare. Located in Pelangi Plaza area, it is not difficult to find and above it is an Inn too!
Loud red doors and a daily specials listed on a chalkboard.
There was dining area and a bar counter. Decor was all over the place with mismatched colours and oddly placed ornaments.
Get what I mean by mismatched? The aprons were cute though.
The daily specials get repeated once again at the table.
Logo-ed napkins are quite passe, no?
Cream of pumpkin soup that was a savoury delight - loved the sweetness and saltiness of this.
Bread was just passable.
Tuna Nicoise Salad is one of those salads that can hardly go wrong - canned tuna, cucumbers, tomatoes and salad dressing.
French Onion Soup in comparison was tastier, more skill was required to execute the melted cheese toast with onion soup.
Seafood Gratin
Like a broth more than a mains, the seafood was barely flavoured to say the least and even the pumpkin soup tasted heaps better.
Ribeye Steak
We all loved the fries and were on the fence for the steak.
Panfried Salmon
As non-Italian this was, this proved to be the best dish of the night. Crispy flaky salmon filet with a delectable cream sauce.
Chicken Cordon Bleu
Not too shabby an attempt but the bland meat was on the overcooked side which even melted cheese could not save. Portions were considerably generous but less is more.
Filet Mignon with Truffle Mushroom Sauce (RM 80)
It took two tries to get the doneness right and even then it lacked seasoning - a letdown somewhat despite a reasonably good cut of beef. The sides of this were uniformly the same across all dishes. A lack of creativity perhaps?
I would definitely not confer this number 1 in the whole of JB, surely there are better options. Price is not great, so is the food.
