Bak Kut Teh is one of those dishes that can get me on a high - to try as many times as possible when I meet a good one and Soon Huat was voted tops amongst our Malaysian contractor friends. Even at 10am, it was packed with people, streaming in and out with claypots constantly on the boil.
There are two counters, one for bak kut teh and another chicken hot pot.
Part of the daily grind that takes place.
Watching them work in such speed made it look like a factory line.

Our additions for Bak Kut Teh!
Claypot Bak Kut Teh (RM 18)
We topped up the portion of 3 with tau kee, mushrooms, meatballs and liver. Boy, it was so hearty and delightful. The soup itself was a winner, wholesome and piping hot. Best part of it, the ingredients were piled so high, I never quite had Bak Kut Teh in such heartiness.
Preserved Vegetables
They had meat in the vegetables, still greasy and tasty!
Fried Dough Fritter
I am really not sure what makes this you tiao so darn delicious, crispy and doughy but it worked very well with the broth. Unlike most fried dough fritters that wither into a soggy mess, this soaks up the broth like a champ and oozes juice with every bite.
Ginger Chicken
This seems to be a must order with BKT and so we did. Made fresh on the spot, this is hardly choked with ginger but had a nice sprinkling as garnishing. Loved the tender juicy chicken!
Homemade barley made it all the heartier.
There is a herbal alternative with ginseng.
I actually prefer this over Ah Soon, though the main difference lies in the broth. It happened to be one of those mornings that my breakfast had to be this hearty - no regrets!
