Fluff Bakery @ Jalan Pisang

What the fluff, the fans of Fluff Bakery would say every single time they try to silence their insatiable hunger for their famous cupcakes. A minimum of 30 minute wait in line is considered lucky whilst others have reported a wait of up to an hour or more just to lay their hands on these famous swirly delights.

They open at the strike of 12 noon to a queue nearly every day and the fresh bakes are sold out within 2 hours or so. 3 if the weather decides to play punk and that is just 5 days a week for these busy bees who also busy themselves with weddings and birthdays and the rest of the sugary sweet needs of the sweet toothed.

So then, being the glutton I am I joined the queue after an invigorating Zumba workout - no better way to reward myself. And at 12:05pm, I joined 30 others in the snaking queue. Here's how it works, before one gets slammed by the other fluff fans for not knowing the rules.

Queue numbers are issued somewhere down the line to prevent queue cutters (methinks this has posed a huge problem before) and each customer is only allowed a maximum of 12 cupcakes, so rejoin the queue if you'd like more.

About 3-4 are allowed into the shop at any one time and boy, it felt like queueing for an LV store visit. The only difference is, everyone walks out with at least a cupcake - correction, a box of cupcakes. It's almost a cardinal sin to walk out with just one. No bouncers in sight but I suppose it is a cordial affair afterall.

6 weekly specials are the maindraw that keep the crowds lapping up their cupcakes in such joy. So far, the permanent residents seem to be salted caramel and nutella red velvet. The other 4 are new every other week - think audacious pairings like lavender lime nerds (fans have said it tastes just like solero), chocolate milkshake and fries and even sea salt chocolate butterscotch latte.

The mayhem that takes place in the shop.

Cupcakes are sold in 1,2 or 6. So 4 it was.

Nutella Red Velvet

nutella

Nutella seems to be their favourite ingredient as seen from their regular instagram posts. Red velvet cake with a dollop of nutella so huge, it overshadowed the rest of the cake.

cupcake 4

Salted Caramel

salted caramel

Once again, the cream, salted caramel drizzle and salted caramel dollop took up so much of the cupcake, I do not remember tasting much of the cake.

Cinnamon Pecan Pie

pecan

The cinnamon pecan filling was a gritty crumbed pecan one, thankfully not sweet.

cupcake 3

Chocolate Butterscotch Liquid Cheesecake

chocolate butterscotch

Terribly complex with so many things going on at the same time, especially with the liquid cheesecake that already tasted tart on its own - together with the myraid of ingredients piled on, I could barely taste a distinct flavour.

Kudos to the team for being ever so creative and ingenious with their ingredient pairings and the endearing instagram user that makes them sociable and of course, very likeable. Yet, I may just be that one oddball who thinks what is the fluff about them? No obscene language or vulgarities meant, just an acronym for what is the big deal really. The cake was mostly dry for the 4 flavours attempted and the frosting comprised of whipped cream mainly and the truckload of fillings that made it taste mostly of fillings.

I prefer my cupcakes' flavours kept to just the frosting and cupcake flavour. Too much of a good thing may not be that great afterall.

    1. I share your sentiments too, it just seems that their fans love a major sugar rush. I'm surprised that it still takes an hour to get them, given how available they are now!
