Hiltl @ Zurich

Hiltl is the world's oldest vegetarian restaurant found in Zurich. First class on Swiss Air has them on the honorary board of food advisors for their prestige customers and that piqued the interest even further. Housed in a three storey building, reservations are highly recommended as it is packed with enough people for the crowd to keep streaming in until the last guest leaves.

They pride themselves in organic food and serving enough vegetarians for them to be listed as one of the must go places. So then, we reached 30 minutes earlier and was turned away until our reserved time.

Depending which level you visit, prices and service matches. I suggest just sticking to the ground floor for a more casual experience, paying top bucks for vegetarian food is not my idea of a fine dining experience.

Peering into the kitchen where all the food gets prepared.

Hiltl merchandise for fans - ranging from cookbooks, aprons, salt and pepper shakers and all the works that makes a merry kitchen.

The spread.

The spread that gets refilled so spontaneously.

I could get lost just reading through all the labels.

There was an even distribution of curries, rice, fried foods, fruits and fresh greens.

Take whatever you fancy and plonk the plate down for the moment of truth. It was horrifying to know how a little bit of this and that could weigh that much.

Water on the house, a rarity in Switzerland and almost any part of Italy as well.

The very distracting candle on the table that seemed to be burning almost forever.

Notable mentions of the buffet spread: mangoes, pompadom, fried jalapenos. The rest were rather ordinary and lacking in spice for the curries.

There are two modes of purchase - pay according to what you eat or pay a fixed price for a buffet. Fact is, each plate worked out to an average of 25 CHF whereas a buffet would be a more value for money 55 CHF. 6 of us with 1 taking on the buffet chalked a bill of SGD 300, was it worth the while? I doubt.
