Mid-Autumn 2013: Xin Cuisine

Many moons ago, we had a Mid Autumn gathering and I brought along Xin Cuisine's famed egg custard mooncakes. Many moons later, I gifted those gold leaf plated ones and bought Peranakan Durian mooncakes just to try. And once again with Mid Autumn long over, this is entirely for remembrance's sake!

Peranakan Durian ($50, 6 pcs)

The indigo hues are indicative of the peranakan touches which was an interesting shade to create for mooncakes, otherwise blue food hardly appeals. Visually unappetizing since they were damaged, another had hers incompletely wrapped in snowskin - they should really look into the quality control. I would never imagine having to gift this.

Nonetheless, they do good durian mooncakes - no fillers in the rich pulpy paste but the snowskin was a pasty letdown. Perhaps #D24isthenewmaoshanwang here, potent and rich enough to keep the durian fans happy. Worth the price though there are areas for improvement.

white lotus paste

Smooth and not too sweet, this was a terrible addiction to begin with. It was a tough choice deciding if I liked pure lotus paste better or the single yolk - if anything, I would bear in mind Xin Cusine when making my mooncake choices next year.
