Tiffin Room High Tea @ Raffles Hotel

tiffin room

Dining at Tiffin Room  is an essential experience at Raffles Singapore, or so they say. This high tea bug is biting me hard, and I'm back on the lookout for these three tier high tea sessions.

queues

With the string of visitors queueing outside the restaurant even before the 330pm first seating, the first thought that came to my mind was - This is looking like Peninsula's highly revered High Tea in Hongkong

harpist

With a harpist serenading us with melodious tunes and a buffet hall filled with foreigners, it felt like a I was miles off from my sunny town.

inside

Enter the gates and be wowed.

champagne

Don't we all wish bubbly was a staple at all meals of the day?

pot

Loving the silverware.

tea

Befitting for a traditional British High Tea, I have Chamomile Tea!

scones

Scones out to suntan, these from the 3 tier were made readily available.

display

More of the yummies to tempt.

3 tier

Every table had a 3 tier high tea set placed gingerly - nothing fancy, even the plates used were hardly exquisite. I later realised it was the same plates used for buffet and then the frivolous in me says, it has to do with the presentation on a three tier. How true.

I usually start with the bottom layer and work my way up.

Tuna Mayonnaise
Salmon with Cream Cheese
Cucumber with Cream Cheese with Mayonnaise and Chives
Turkey with Whole Grain Mayonnaise

sandies

Finger sandwiches without bread skins, nothing that I cannot replicate at home but it is about eating it in a hotel lobby that makes the difference. If I may pick a favourite, it had to be salmon and cream cheese.

sweets

The second layer was simple with a chocolate mousse cup, fruit tartlet and financier with lemon squirt. The former had to be so good, some tables were spotted requesting for seconds. Only meant for the chocoholic, chocolate cup filled with mousse and crunchy chocolate crumbs within. I thought it was an overload.

more sweets

The third, lemon meringue tart and raspberry choux puff. Pretty to look at but meh-dinary. Some even left this layer untouched.

If the three tier does not appease the hunger pangs, head over to their buffet counters for more luck.

dimsum

The dimsum selection was popular amongst tourists for a valid reason. For locals, it would be a corner to make a miss on.

char siew pau

Steamers were filled with Mini Char Siew Pau (Chicken), Spinach Dumpling (Seafood), Siew Mai (Chicken and Shrimp) and Crystal Dumpling (Vegetarian) but the strange one that I had more than one helping of was siew mai. Hongkong chefs would have gagged at this but I just needed a savoury kick in the sea of sweet.

More sweets to numb the tastebuds.

White Chocolate Cherry Cake
Coconut, Pineapple and Lime Cake
Pear Almond Cake

It is a no wonder why I hardly doggy pack any sweet treats from Ah Teng's Bakery, proven not outstanding.

tea
Fresh Berries in “Week end in Shanghai” Tea Broth was surprisingly refreshing and would be great as a chilled jelly.

scones

High tea is hardly complete without scones and they have two types both original and raisin to go with clotted cream and strawberry jam. The good thing about their scones is the absence of the alkaline taste that usually plaques scones. Other than that, totally missing out on the buttery fragrance and sin factor.

jam

Jam and clotted cream to complete the experience.

scones

Slap on the jam and cream for the scone experience.

fruit

Freshly cut fruits were near the tops for favourite item from the high tea session.

desserts

The rest of the sweets that were mostly forgettable in all that sugar rush.

It is a waste for a place like Tiffin Room with the ambience, location and history to fail in the face of average food. Pricey high tea that I may think twice heading back for.

fountain

The pretty fountain that marks the end of this supposedly enchanting afternoon.

Comments

  1. So what's the point of the 3-tier if the pastries are all available at the buffet counter? They look delish though!
