I shied away from Taratata Bistrot quite a few times, perhaps the reviews were not sparkling enough or there was just not enough about Taratata in its name to draw me there. I was all ready for Keong Siak snacks but it decided to shut its doors suddenly for maintenance works. With Esquina packed like sardines, all I really wanted was a cosy dinner so Taratata it reluctanctly was.

Reasonably packed.

Bread basket with butter was crusty, perfect hunger fillers but that was it. I was hardly impressed with the carbs presented.

French Onion Soup ($14)
The waiter was kind enough to portion this into two
for us and each scorching hot cauldron was a generous wedge of cheese
toast soaking in soup. Heavenly it smelt, heavenly it was indeed. The
balance of savoury and sweet was delicate but
executed so well.
Dozen Baked Burgundy Escargots in Herbed Garlic Butter ($24)
The crunchy garlic toast was actually the bread
from the bread basket and toasting it made it more delicious. Escargots
were well flavoured too, eliciting a round of spontaneous praise for
this. I enjoyed scraping the bottom of the plate
for more.
Crab Salad with Pomelo and Avodado ($16)
Looked and sounded ordinary but I was completely
ashamed for hesitating ordering this. I actually envisioned the dish
appearing like a snowcapped mountain of salad with shredded crabmeat
tossed all over, hence the pleasant surprise when
the crab salad was a generous portion of crab topped with pureed
avocado. Refreshing flavours with sour afternotes, delightful!
Duck Confit with White Bean Ragout ($29)
With such a fine display of appetizers,
expectations started to mount for the mains. Crispy duck skin with meat a
tad dry and a bland white bean ragout.
Crispy Pork Belly ($28)
I appreciated the firm meat and melt in the mouth
fats, while it was still miles away from Ember’s decadent signature.
Decent and portions were alright for a lady.
Hearty French fare that scored at the appetizers more than mains. May be back for more of their appetizers though!
