Bay Sushi @ MBS

bay sushi

Groupon had a part to play for this visit and possibly for the rest of us who had vouchers and left it till last minute to utilize. Snaking queues and ill equipped service staff to start with. Conveyor belt sushi seemed to be part of its concept – and then it dawned on me, it was advertised as a fine dining place in a casual eatery.

Four different sets were available as set menu – sushi and sashimi, eel sushi, grilled pork and rice or
For the bang of the buck, most headed for sushi and sashimi.
miso soup

I taste an instant miso soup.

chawanmushi

Chawanmushi

Watery; a sign of it being undercooked and that tingling sensation on the tongue suggests a dash of bicarbonate too many. One measly prawn and sliver of fishcake made Sakae Sushi’s look so good.
salad

Salad

I love wafu sauce on anything. Period.
agedashi tofu

Agedashi Tofu

Gives new meaning to agedashi tofu with a harder tofu and thicker skin. Almost like fishcake.

sushi

Sushi

Proportion of fish and rice follows that of the Land of Rising Sun, skewed towards more fish. Nothing to wow but I’m glad it was decent.
sashimi

Sashimi selection
Swordfish, salmon, tuna

Thick and adequately fresh. With the appetizers going down the tastehill, I was thankful these were more than decent.

cheesecake

Caramel cheesecake for dessert. Small portions and too sweet but fits the bill of a Japanese dessert – enough for a sweet ending but definitely left heaps of room for dessert.

Spotty service – drinks took forever to arrive as with the appetizers that appeared in buffet style – in masses. Bay sushi does have an interesting array of creative sushi (there’s even one looking like MBS) but at first attempt, I was hardly wowed. It may be the curse of the bulk voucher campaign but if it hardly wowed, I have second thoughts.
