Plaza Brasserie @ Parkroyal On Beach Road

Special thanks to Karen for the invite!

plaza brasserie

The sister company of PanPacific group, Park Royal adopts the same approach for its buffet themed specials. For the month of July, they are headed the crabbilicious way! Word has it they are fully booked on weekends and have had repeats from customers up to three times a week. True to that, when we were there for a buffet, it was considerably packed on a Friday evening.

edamame

Japanese corner.

Dessert!

juices

Juices to quench the thirst!

for crab

One of the indicators for a crabby meal!

table

Table laid for massive feasting.

Mud crabs and sri lankan crabs are the two types used in their crab showcase. Comments below are based entirely on the flavour. Due to crabs used, the texture of the meat ranged from succulent to flaky and flavourful.

chef

Chef Jackson and one of his creations.

butter crab

Salted Egg Yolk Crab

A personal favourite of the lot. This sweet one had a butter-egg yolk batter than mostly stuck to the shell and made it tongue-licking delicious. Loved the grit of the salted egg yolk.

salted egg

Butter Crab

Almost like the salted egg yolk but without the salty egg. looks alike too!

nonya

Nonya Crab

Spices used were a tad too strong for the crabs, seemed quite a mismatch for me though. Would have had been better as a chicken dish infact.

crabs

Stir Fried Crab with Spring Onion

The least colourful of the lot with a simple fry up yet as simple as it is, this was decent. Great with rice.

stir fried

XO Crab

Most liked this but I thought it okay.

chillicrab

Chilli Crab

Local delight. While the sweetness was captured, the missing link for this was the punch the sweet savoury gravy that would make mantous a must. They provided toast and mantou to dip for this but the latter ended up overfried and stiff.

crabcake

Bite sized portions are always great for popping into the mouth without taking too much stomach space.

crab canapes

Canapes station

Tune canapé, djon crab cake, crab toast, olive and potato crabmeat balls in pesto

I applaud the effort in incorporating these morsels into the crab theme as well yet tapas being tapas usually end up forgettable. The croquette was one that I found happiness with though – crispy with sweet potato filling.

shark's fin

Shark’s Fin and Crabmeat soup

A buffet take on what would be deemed as the priciest offering – soupy and a little too much starch.

cheese

Cheese corner

A habit of mine is to try everything.

prata

Prata station

Highly sought after, the prate chef was constantly kept busy refilling the pratas.

tissue prata

Made on request.

savoury prata

Plain, Egg, Cheese, Chicken, Cheese, Tissue (Made on request)

Chewy pratas with a number of fillings to pick from. The tissue prate was a hit with its crispy thinness and novelty for sure! Milo dinosaur to go with this would have been ideal!

Banana, Durian, Chocolate

Sweet triumphed over savoury here and I actually liked their durian prata inspite of the stench.

Chicken and vegetable curry

These spicy ones made great company for the savoury pratas, brownie points for the Indian station!

duck x roast pork

Roast meats
Duck, pork

Roast duck and pork were quite the star too but I found either a tad pedestrian in taste.

dimsum

Riding on a high of their Hongkong dimsum, these were ordinary.

sweet pratas

Tempura

Oil taste was evident, batter was not as light as expected.

raw

Oysters

Sashimi
Salmon, Octopus

I usually make a beeline for the raw food to fill up on them to make the value of the buffet worth, as did all the other likeminded diners. These were reasonably fresh.

sea cucumber

Braised Sea Cucumber

soft shell

Soft shell crab

These two signature items are available all year round, 365 days without fail. Crispy deepfried soft shell crab with a delectable mayo.

herbal prawn

Herbal Poached Prawns

Fresh prawns with an equally delish broth.

hainanese chicken rice

Hainanese Chicken Rice

Fragrant rice with a tender chicken cut. Not forgetting the power chilli sauce and mashed garlic of course. Tian Tian material? Not quite but a decent take on our local favourite.

laksa

Laksa

A tad too lemak but it comes complete with hums! Guilt, at its fullest.

dessert

Durian Pengat

Everyone wants a piece of this durian pengat pie, theirs is pasty and sweet.

Chocolate fondue was somewhat disappointing with the fountain missing. Waffles were plain and slightly soggy.

chocolate truffle

Chocolate Truffle Cake

The dessert that got replenished so many times over, I lost count. Bittersweet smooth chocolate fudge, adored the crunchy bits embedded within.

yam icecream

Yam Icecream

I’m a sucker for all things old school – magnolia icecream fits the bill to a T. Nothing fabulous about scooping icecream from a tub and colourful sprinkles, yet this struck a chord with me. Time to pay the roadside icecream man a visit!

rice pudding

Rice pudding with vanilla sauce

Odd texture, what I would expect to be bread and butter pudding turned out grainy with sago seeds.

rock melon

White Fungus with Rock Melon dessert

Chinese dessert that was mildly sweet and healthy!

cakes

Cheesecake

Moist cheese cake with a biscuit base that somehow did not go with the cake.

Ma Lai Goh

My favourite of the cake platter - piece after piece. Just the right density!

carrot cake

Carrot Cake ($8)

Purportedly one of their best sellers. This carrot cake has a huat kueh texture and packed with wholesome walnuts.

Monday to Thursday - $52++
Friday to Sunday - $55++
