Subway Niche @ Paragon

I've got a soft spot for all things peranakan, particularly the kuehs. Subway Niche like Kue Kue, are alternatives to the wildly popular Bengawan Solo. Located in the basement of Paragon, this takeaway corner has always been there for the longest time...as with the other outlet at Wisma. To be honest, it was the green coloured egg agar agar that got me interested but I didn't order that for takeaway.

kaya cake

Kaya Cake ($1)

One dry cake, more coconut than kaya methinks.

Kueh Sarlat ($0.90)

Kaya custard that was overcooked meets sticky glutinous rice. I'd appreciate Bengawan Solo a whole lot more after this.

harum manis

Harum Marnis (3 for $1.60)

Although I really adore the delicious shade of orange, it was a tad too glaring for comfort. The best of the lot though still miles away from Bengawan Solo's moist and fluffy one.

lapis sagu

Lapis Sagu ($0.90)

The layers were too defined and separate to taste..somehow it was unlike the usual chewy and sticky kueh that I love peeling layer after layer of. Disappointing though the colours are really pretty.

kueh lapis

Kueh Lapis ($1.60)

Dry, dry, dry. Still better than fullerton's!

Pandan Cake ($1)

What made Bengawan Solo world famous is the awesome fragrance and bouncy sponge cake. Subway Niche offers a much thinner slice and lacks the spongeyness about it.

There you have it, why I am still very much a Bengawan Solo fan.

  1. Have always walked past this stall at Wisma. Never eaten their products before. I heard that Subway (the subway chain) is/going to sue them.
