IKEA eats

Truth be told, I love IKEA. Each visit is hardly complete without dropping by the cafeteria for a bite or two, or leaving with something from their gourmet store. Like the chinese idiom goes - 醉翁之意不在酒, the intent of the tipsy is not on the wine.

Their cafe seems to be the main crowd puller - all the time, breakfast, lunch and dinner you probably still have to wait for a table or fight for one. Menu has taken some tweaking through the years but there are just some items that will always be there and make it to the dining table each visit.

meatballs

Swedish Meatballs (10 for $5.40)

This is one of those things that remains on the menu through the years and justifies its existence by being so very consistently good. I honestly have never walked away from the cafeteria grumbling about their meatballs - that being said, their frozen meatballs have become such convenient dinners that the family and I simply love this unassuming meatball! Perfect with cranberry sauce and boiled potatoes. Comfort food, so simplistically.

chicken wings

Chicken Wings

Yet another of the classic IKEA must eats. Juicy wings, one that I'd gladly chomp down to the bone.

cold prawns

Poached Water Prawns ($4.20)

I had this just once and never looked back. Judge this bowl of cold prawns kindly, you will be surprised how amazing these are! Mildly salted, these poached prawns make awesome appetizers. Drizzle some lemon juice, makes a perfect salad with the lettuce.

Well the thing about dining in the cafeteria is - feeling guilty staying beyond your tray's worth of food. People hog tables with strollers, wailing kids and whatnots - for the less thick-skinned, buying food off the stands and walking around sounds like a more comfy idea. Prices have taken a slight adjustment down - HOORAY! They have removed my favourite curry puff and tollhouse cookies - BOO.

hotdogs

Hotdog ($1)

Nobody does hotdogs quite like IKEA, quite honestly. Boiled chicken hotdog slapped onto soft bun - that simple but what they do so right is the sauce stand! Trying to squirt my mustard and chilli sauce in that desired zigzag fashion has been the to-do task for YEARS - and I always end up in a saucy mess. All part of the whole hotdog eating process - double yums for this. Still loving it!

waiting

Crowd puller.

Soft serve icecream ($0.50)

The brainy IKEA folks have now made this more interesting - get a token and watch your icecream being dispensed. Carnival-like? You bet, an absolute crowd pleaser and puller. My thoughts of dispensing the world's tallest icecream cone were deflated when I spotted the tokens.

peer

Scrutinizing her icecream cone.

Simply place the cone in the holder, slot in the token, hit the button and you get one of the most uniform icecream cones formed. No such thing as lady over counter showing favouritism by giving the one before you more icecream. DAMN.

softserve

At 50 cents, I really cannot hiam but this had a whipped cream taste and consistency...variantly different from the last tasted!

These are the reasons why I so abashedly and shamelessly love IKEA for.
