Sushi Express @ Citylink

Sushi Express had an opening special of $1 per plate of sushi and I remember scoffing at it. How good can sushi so cheap be? Fastforward to the end of their promotion and plates of sushi resumed their regular pricing of $1.80. Sushi Express seems to be where Sakae was when they first started - affordable sushi.

sushi express

More hygienic way of dispensing wasabi - from a sachet! Belittle this not, packs a feisty punch.

tea

Help yourself to tea bags to dispense your own tea.

conveyor belt

Conveyor belt, so old school. I remember being so excited by it years back. Neither are they upmarket with touch screen menus.

prawn

Raw ebi sushi was sweet and fresh, surprisingly!

salmon

See the slice of salmon drape around the ball of rice? That's how sushi should be - ingredients over carbs. Decent take on salmon sushi.

uni

Uni sushi at $1.80 for two is a bank breaking deal! Sakae charges $5.99 for two. Now everyone need not break the bank for uni, loved it! Possibly the most value for money deal at Sushi Express.

shrimp

Not too sure what went into it but amidst the roe and crunchy silver fish was a flavourful sushi.

shellfish

Abalone sushi with a sticky sauce to match. Thought this was a tad too saucy, would pass off as Topshell more than abalone.

cap alert

There's a reminder that comes along our way every now and then - to keep the hygiene caps on.

sushi express

Somewhere near their closing time of 10pm, the caps get removed!

no caps!

Total exposure. I wonder what happens to the unconsumed after a public parade like that.

More than decent sushi at pocket friendly prices, crispy seaweed with chewy rice balls...nary a stale moment. Would be back!

The second visit followed hot on the heels of the first. Considerably filled for lunch on a weekend though not in the "packed to the brim" sense.

uni

Uni Sushi

This time round, it was bitter.

scallop

Scallops with terikayki sauce

All in, it was two plump scallops halved. On the soft side though still fresh. I prefer my scallops full-sized with some bounce at least.

lobster salad

Lobster Salad

Still a fan of their crisp seaweed though the salad itself was ordinary.

crabmeat

Crabmeat Salad

Somehow each time this crabmeat salad with its anemone-like tentacles peep out, I'll be tempted to try. Just crunchy shellfish with mayo - I'm not too sure if it's even crabmeat! Looks like the mock ones I used to eat as a child.

torched prawn

Seared Prawn topped with roe

Their cooked sushi gets served without the safety hats - methinks condensation will form easily, probably ruining the taste. Possibly their best tasting sushi from two visits. Loved the charred flavour of this.

I still think Sushi Express does serve good value sushi, just do not expect top notch quality for such rock bottom prices.

  1. Ironic that there is emphasis on hygiene, yet the tea bags in the picture are not individually packed?

I do not like conveyor belt systems as the sushi gets cold and you will not know how long it has been out (not fresh)

The seared prawn with roe looks good and valued for money!

  2. hahaha TOTALLY get your point! They trust the patrons not to fiddle with the tea bags...heh yes indeed..pretty value for money! True...but then again, at such prices, can't really expect too much either.

They're running a promo now..$1.50/plate..which makes is more worthwhile!
