Long Bar @ Raffles Hotel

Long bar!

I like Raffles Hotel. For some strange reason, the architecture appeals so much. Restaurants within the hotel tempt the tastebuds so, yet I've to find time for all of them! Long Bar is probably publicised to death as the bar to be at - according to travel guides. I feel ashamed for not checking it out - especially since our national drink gained fame at Long Bar!

piece 7 band

As I grew up, the Dad used to ravel me with his visits to Long Bar - throwing peanut shells on the floor!

The home of Singapore Slings.

entrance

Take the flight of stairs up and get greeted by doors swung open. Packed with people, I was pleasantly surprised.

crowd

Mostly expats and tourists - some were seen holding onto the Singapore Guide, flipped to the page that lists Long Bar.

bar counter

Counter of spirits. Somewhat old school and aged, but that is the charm of the Raffles. They have managed to capture a bit of history in each part of the hotel. I have to admit, I have not gone into the hotel proper to have a look yet!

lamp

Charmed by the lamp even! Love their ceiling fans - reminded me of a scene in Lion King. Literally fans swishing left to right as the band played on.

Loved the whole feel of the place, enjoyed the band so much! Felt like we were all in the deck of some Carribean cruise with sailors around, listening to the catchy tunes. Does not help that the lead was dressed in loud printy tight shirts! Different from the jazzy loungey music that a large proportion of bars have these days.

singapore sling!

Singapore Sling ($26)

Proportions are listed for those who would like to replicate it at home. Many have boo-ed this - claiming it's "no longer what it used to be" and that Raffles uses "canned pineapple juice". I wish I had the chance to taste the original and modified to comment.

Very fruity this is, could pass off as a mocktail indeed. Without a trace of alcohol. Too sweet the companions thought but I actually liked it. Flies like a butterfly, whacks you like a bee thereafter. Silent killer. Definitely not a mind boozer like cocktails from Ink Bar, it's truly great to unwind with a cocktail or two and not feel that tipsy. Between Post Bar and Long Bar, I do think the latter does a meaner job.

nuts

Their famed boxes of peanuts.

nut shells

Guess what I did with them?

Swipe them onto the floor with much gusto! There you have it, Long Bar attempted and loving it!

  1. Hi

yes, in fact they were the first to come up the drink and term it Singapore Sling.

sorry, do not quite understand the part on throwing peanut shells on the floor. another option will be status quo, let it remain on table. =)
