My brushes with Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck have been ill-fated. The supposed CNY lunch was replaced with Royal China and then there was supposed to be a gathering but it was cancelled and randomly, we ended up at this particular outlet after I had a molten custard pau craving yet again. At 230pm, finding a seat is difficult at most places with the other outlet at Takashimaya declaring an endless wait without reservations. While Super Peking Duck had a table for us, most of the signatures were sold out - Peking Duck, Roasted Meats and even soups!
Unfathomable activity even way past the lunch hour.
Still refusing to take down the festive decor when I visited in March.
Meatball with Cabbage Soup ($6)
A clean-tasting soup without the complexity of ingredients, juicy cabbage with a meatball minced so fine, you barely required effort to even chew. I liked how homecooked this tasted.
Since the usual barbequed pork or even signature peking duck was out, we headed dimsum with the remaining items.
Both packed quite a punch on their own...spicier than normal.
Steamed Prawn Dumpling "Ha Kow" ($4.80)
Found the skin a tad clumpy, unimpressed.
Steamed Pork Dumpling "Siew Mai" ($4.40)
Siewmai fared a whole lot better though not spectacular once again.
Steamed Rice Roll with Shrimp ($5.50)
Unlike the har gow, the rice roll was a lot better than the dimsum skin. Still not a fan of the artificially enhanced shrimp.
Steamed BBQ Pork Bun ($3.50)
Found the bun texture slightly hard on the outside and a lot denser than the usual fluffy buns. It could have been a case of overcooking but this was decent.
At least the char siew stuffing was delish!
Steamed Custard Bun ($3.60)
And for the item that many of the friends have been raving nonstop about. One even tsk-ed me saying Imperial Treasure's would triumph Crystal Jade's anytime.
Molten...yes.
Dense filling...not quite. This was slightly runny though that really is the whole point of molten custard paus. I wish it were richer.
My main grouse? The texture of the pau which was a tad dense though not as dense as Summer Palace's!
Is it the best as they say? Not quite. I'm still heading back to Crystal Jade.
Baked Egg Tart ($3.30)
Well worth it! Flaky layers and wobbly custard though Yan Ting's still tops the list.Quite a major surprise with the rest of the dimsum being less than stellar.
Peking duck I'll be back for someday given it's so signature!
A nugget of trivia though, the kitchen staff are really well fed judging from the amounts of food that gets served...think eefu noodles, congee, rice and dishes...dimsum too!
