Darcis has made his way into Singapore and has since been crowned the "best" our shores has to offer. And allowing curiosity to get the better of me I had every intention to dropby MBS for a bite or two but..I was pleasantly surprised with a box! Hooray to surprises.
No intention to be harsh on them but here's their promise - Chewy on the outside with a smooth and creamy ganache filling, take a bite and understand why this elegant confection has such a passionate and loyal following. (Darcis website)
Macarons are like lego...which I have a penchant for either scattering...
Or stacking them up to admire the colours.
Almond Milk
Dusted with shaved almonds, this was a major tease. The only one that qualified for the chewy exterior and for that split second, it felt like Pierre Herme all over again. Until of course, the ganache filling was tasted. Smooth and creamy? It had a light consistency..like whipped cream.
Blackcurrant Violet
Crumble it did upon biting, this had a slight sourish taste. At this point I thought the fruity flavours were crumbly and non-fruity chewy.
Lemon
Another that crumbled to such sugary nothingness, I wish it had a bit more punch in the sour.
Pistachio
Barely nutty nor strong in flavour, this was alright.
Praline
Still missing the chewy shells, this was too sweet.
A giveaway on their inconsistencies..the shells were not uniformly shaped with the top being significantly smaller than the bottom. Honestly not nitpicking but it does stand out like a sore thumb amongst the row of perfectly shaped.
Their macarons hinges on being overly sweet or artificially sweetened at times...unlike the Lord of Macarons, whose flavours are alot more complex and refined.
Pierre Herme successor? I doubt.
Singapore's best? Almond Milk!
It's a good enough alternative to the macarons available locally though I'd place my bet on both Darcis and Jewels Artisan for comfort.
