Shinkansen Bento Sets

I remember watching Japan Hour on CNA and drooling infront of the telly when the host tucked heartily into her train bento set. It is an ordinary bento set but it's the experience of sitting in a speed train tucking into one.

Fine, I am a sucker for such. Just like eating a crappy dinner infront of the world's most famous cabaret show was acceptable by show standards.

Bento sets are available for purchase at all train stations, whether it's before or after boarding. The only difference lies in the variety and price.

At Shin Osaka station where we took the speed train to Tokyo. One of the busiest train stations in Osaka, was especially so when the Japanese were returning home to celebrate new year's with their loved ones. This particular bento shop was the only one with so many outlets within the train station. Their bentos get ranked according to popularity and I had a hard time deciding which one to get!

Ended up with two prettyful boxes.

The top ranked bento based on sales. To be honest, I bought it because it looked so colourful and beautiful! Beauty, always comes at a price. These are priced slightly under 1000 Yen.

Another shot of the box before I tucked into it with much anticipation.

Here's the lowdown on the taste test! I started with the bottom row and proceeded up.

(L-R)

Pickles - Nothing special.

Stewed bamboo shoots and sea kelp - These were alright.
Fishcake, yam and seaweed appetizer - I loved yam best of the lot.Riceball trio - All three were chewy balls of delight, nothing too out of the world
Grilled fish and tamago - Fishy business. Tamago was still better than those found here!
Prawn and Vegetable tempura - Cold yet not soggy. Delicious, somehow.
Stewed mushroom with peppers - Tasty.

.By the end of the bento set, I felt too green-ed out. As much as I am a vegetable fan, there were too many greens included in this. Looks versus taste, looks won.

Moving onto the next most popular bento set which was equally colourful!

Kawaiiiiii!

(L-R)

Ham corn salad - Yummy! They thoughtfully included a mayo satchet.
Pickles and Yam - Still a fan of yam.
Tamago and root vegetables - Nothing bad to fault.
Eel rice - Decent.
Prawn and Vegetable Tempura - Nice...
Assorted sushi - Let's just say this was ordinary at best.

Once again, looks won taste.

Moving onto the simpler assortment that looked most unattractive.

Yet...wayyyy more delicious than the top two attempted.

If you failed to grab one before boarding, fret not..there's a shinkansen lady onboard the trains who will go round with her trolley full of tit bits and drinks.

Hard to miss!

train sandwich

570 Yen for a trio of tonkatsu sandwiches.

train sandwich

Evenly laid out.

train sandwich upclose

Believe or not, the sandwich was awesome.Once again proven, chilled food tastes just so much better. The only grouse about this is, the patty was minced meat, lacking the porky bite I adore.
