ToastBox @ Bugis Junction

Toast Box joins the numerous nostalgic cafes that fit the bill of "going back in time" to a T.
Under the huge umbrella of BreadTalk Group, Toast Box and Tea Loft are two of the cafe style eateries. Toast Box first caught my eye years ago with its exposed butter mountain at all its outlets. I used to question its hygiene levels but that has long become signature of Toast Box.

Horlicks

Made way too thick, in cases like these...moderate is good enough.

Barley

Very homemade, nice morning perk-me-up without the sugar rush.

Kaya Toast

Kaya spread so thin, the butter slapped on seemed to make this butter toast rather than kaya toast.

Chicken Floss Toast

The bread itself was toasted too long, resulting in a hard and dry texture. Topping the toast with chicken floss made this even drier on the palette. Not a favourite.

Po Lo Bun

Nothing out of the ordinary that is worth mentioning.

Peanut Butter Thick Toast

This fared way better than the rest! Methinks the thickness of the bread does play apart in the overall bite. Thick peanutty goodness!

This was totally laugh-out-loud. A shrivelled up banana leaf to complete the look!

Otah Thick Toast

The otah was acutely spicy, did not quite go with the toast somehow. Of the two, I preferred sweet over savoury for thick toast!

Personally, nothing will or can replace Red House Bakery or Chin Mee Chin as much as the newer cafes follow the decor or menu items. The past well captured in the yellowing tiles, the dirt caught in between the cracks...the fragrance of freshly baked bread and of course, the loud disgruntled over the counter aunties complete the picture. Given that BreadTalk is part of the group, with the quality of bread offered at Toast Box makes me think twice of revisiting. Have not found a compelling reason to, yet.

  1. thanks for posting this! Hubby and I usually hang out in this branch to get our kopi-c or teh-o ping after dinner as they made it much better than those 6-dollar a cup in Starbucks. Plus they cost 5x less :) But i do agree, the kaya toast sucks. I prefer the one at Ya Kun.
