A not so voluntary stay at Raffles Hospital

As some would know I was struck by the unluckiest stoke of luck, before a very happening and eventful long weekend. Dengue, is its name. Some education on this disease ailment unfortunate mosquito bite that would develop to a persistent fever, backaches, rashes and ultimately, hospitalization should the bloodcount dip too low. In some cases, losing consciousness and unstoppable bleeding may occur. Numerous bloodtests and being put on the saline drip was part of it. Anyhow, the episode behind me...I'm immune to one strain of this virus that has 4 strains, but only 2 locally. :P Please be mindful of stagnant water everyone! Be safe, or sorry.

To be honest, I was dreading the hospital stay partly because of the food. Hospital food as far as I can ever recall, was boring...and as much as possible, bland. Who ever has a feast in the hospital anyway? Save for the other delish food sneaked in. Surprise, surprise...! Amongst the first few things I was handed whilst being transfered to my bed was a menu.

The eyes brightened up, almost immediately and the pain from the needle pokes barely hurt. I guess those were the only things that I looked forward to; mealtimes! Breakfast was served bright and early at 645am, lunch at noon, teabreak at 3, dinner at 6 and evening cap at 8. Timed so nicely for a speedy recovery!

There was a choice of appetizer, mains and dessert every meal and you had to submit them a day in advance.

Appetizers were usually a choice of soups; I had a go at the oriental soup. Wholesome goodness.

Potato carrot soup...slurplicious!

Spinach soup was odd.

Lamb Chops with mashed potato and mint sauce

A tad dry and tough but I found this healthy attempt yummy enough to lick the plate clean.

Indian and vegetarian menus were available upon request. Instead of steamed rice, I had chappati! Chewy and non-greasy, I actually liked this.

Stewed brinjal that was both spicy and flavourful. Pity some brinjals were undercooked, otherwise it was well cooked dish.

More lamb! Gravy so rich, it honestly did not taste like hospital food. I slurped up every drop and polished off the lamb with such greed.

The second attempt at Indian was sadly tragic. Chicken Bon Bon and Cauliflower curry. The chicken bon bon was shredded chicken tossed in sesame oil whilst cauliflower curry was very acquired with the pungent spices.

Chinese selection of kailan and nonya curry chicken!

Awesome use of coconut milk without being cloying, the tender chicken and soft potatoes. Thumbs up good!

Fish Burger for breakfast! No simple burger, this had tartare sauce slapped on a deepfried dory fish fillet. Almost like Mcdonalds in fact. Pity it did not come with fries.

As if breakfast and lunch are lite affairs, here comes tea...!

A buttery marble cake for tea, not too bad.

Moist chocolate muffins.

Banana cake that I adored. Fluffy cake with a nice banana fragrance to round it off. I wish there were seconds.

Icecream anyone? This was beginning to feel like a 3 course in some restaurant and not a hospital.

With that, I ended my 2 day stay with a grin and of course, kilos heavier. To good health, cheers!
