Jean Pierre Cohier Patisserie @ Paris, France


Breakfast in Paris and Amsterdam were particularly memorable for me. The Mom would reminisce about her UK days, baguette tucked under the pits and walking to school whilst chomping down the cheapest breakfast. With such imagery in mind, I had to do the same to remember Paris in someway or another.

Established in 1969, Cohier Patisserie is the winner of 2006's Grand Prix De La Baguette. Like the Emmys are to Actresses and Oscars to Singers, Grand Prix De La Baguette celebrates bakers. Through these contests, the traditional means of baking bread is preserved as the modest baguettes were once faced with adversity; machine churned out baguettes versus handmade ones.

Yearly, various chefs are honoured and such an award is like striking lottery perhaps, people start flocking to your shop (no matter how tiny). Cohier Patisserie was thankfully within walking distance of the hotel and a must-try it became!

The glass doors swing open and you are immediately greeted with wafts of fresh bakes. Flour never smelt better in any other form but bread.


4 years later, they are still celebrating and reminding the patrons.


A legendary must try though I could not bring myself to tuck this length of bread under the pits.


Award winning, undoubtedly. The crust is good beyond comprehension, the level of crispiness attained. Almost surreal. In fact, the crust and innards are in their own worlds, with hugely different textures yet maintaining their own. The innards are like huat kueh equivalent of chewy. The baguette was so divine, butter was not even required.

I would not mind being banished and locked up in JP Cohier's kitchen for life.


Delifrance first introduced these to our sunny shores years back and these were quadruple the size of Delifrance's. Light and delightful!


Croissants are always a must, though not as spectacular as the baguette.


Guess what's within the pyramid packaging...?


Ispahan! I cannot bear to walk away without getting one...at least to prove it ispahans are supposed to taste the same as Laduree's. Chewy rose sugar shell with sweet raspberries and lychee buttercream within...I'm loving this version waaaay better! The flavours came together very well, as if they were matchmade and meant to be. Rose and Lychee makes a whole lot more sense now, than it ever did.


Opera...got the chocoholic dancing on her feet. One of the more memorable ones this trip.


Financier, irresistible. Chopped pistachios, dense flavours...do not underestimate this tiny one.

I found more treasures than expected at Jean Pierre Cohier. Branding is sometimes just fluff, substance matters more I reckon. Breakfast in Paris, unforgettable in every way.
