Viktoria Konditore @ Wurzburg, Germany

Viktoria cake is this cake shop's specialty, not that I thought much of it when we spied it from outside. For this entry, I randomly did a search on its origins and uncovered its royal past; named after Queen Victoria who liked a slice of sponge cake for tea, traditional victoria sponges contain jam sandwiched between two sponge cakes.

Wurzburg's interpretation of it was a gorgeous and seemingly tediously crafted sponge cake! It came in several flavours; lemon, strawberry and original.

Strawberry it was! It looked like the sponges were carefully rolled and arranged to form a cake with strawberry cream. This was a cross between genoise sponge and the lighter Japanese cousin, this was in between coarse and soft, thankfully not soggy from all the cream...a nice little snack by the roadside watching the world roll by.

  1. As a fan of tea history I was very interested to find out about the history of "Viktoria" cake. Whatever it is called I would love a piece of cake right now!
