Tanjong Rhu Pau Revisited

鸳鸯包 and I are like star-crossed lovers, meeting is fraught with much difficulty. The first two times I was waved off with "Come back after 3pm", the last was met with "All sold out." To whoever that purchased 50 at one go and wiped out all the day's stocks, you are one huge meanie!

No bigger than a baby's fist, Tanjong Rhu further redefines what is petite.

鸳鸯包's a combination of red bean paste and lotus paste, in an act of defiance I purchase both individually to match my own 鸳鸯包. Of the two, red bean paste overshadows with an over sweetness.

I was pleasantly surprised to find dao sar piahs too! One of each; lotus paste and savoury green bean. Light flaky layers revealed the wholesome fillings. I adore how neither is too sweet, in fact moderately nice.

The portion of Big chicken pau got me baffled. Big in Tanjong Rhu's terms is the equivalent of the normal sized paus from competitors. I found this a tad sweet.

Char Siew Pastry, once again a delish pastry with buttery layers.

All in, Tanjong Rhu's pastries seem to outshine the supposed famous char siew paus.

A couple of weeks later, the Dad had the luck in hunting down the 鸳鸯包s! Mega hooray to that. These are sized bigger than the puny Char siew paus but considerably regular sized.

Pry open to reveal a dry salted egg yolk with a pinch of white lotus paste and red bean paste. The red bean seemed to cower over the lotus paste, making this more red bean than lotus paste. Somehow, I was disappointed and preferred by own mismatched red bean-lotus paste pau better than this star-crossed version.
