Itacho's 50% off selected items promo has been causing much buzz each time I walk pass it and of all days, I had to pick a weekend to join the snaking queues who wanted to take advantage of the promotion. At least a 30 minute wait before entry is granted. The waiter gently informs that salmon cooked or raw is not available, due to the recent Iceland Volcanic Eruption that had an impact on the supply. I silently winced, salmon sashimi was amongst those I was looking forward to.
Fill in your own menu which was frustrating given that the items were not totally reflected on the slips as compared to the menu proper. Items were still missed out despite ticking! A word of advice, just rattle off what you want to a waitress, higher rate of accuracy though she still missed out some items. Baffling.
Why bother painstakingly filling in the sheets when the kitchen forgets at least a quarter of your order anyway?
The proper way to consume sushi, the same way I love to do...so incorrectly. Blend the wasabi with soya sauce and dunk the sushi in.
The freshest wasabi with the more pungent whiff ever. I figured I cleared the nose and almost teared after taking in a huge breath.
Pork Chop Rice ($12)
Decent take on this.
Fairy Shrimp Sakura Roll ($3.50)
One of the few half priced items, these were puny..smaller than bite-sized even.
Tuna Sashimi ($9)
Swordfish Sashimi ($9.60)
Fresh but at 3 buckeroos per slice, it screams over the board pricey!
Salt Shrimp Tempura Sushi ($1.80)
Salt Scallop Sushi ($2)
The gimmick lies in picking your choice of salt to go with the sushi. Curry salt, green tea or sea salt to go. Crispy ebi tempura..it was so good, I ate it all - tail included. The scallops were droolworthy yummy, so much so we had seconds of it.
Coming to the salt bit, all three were there about in taste...without causing much impact on the overall taste of the sushi, anyway.
California Roll ($1.60)
Adore the generous sprinkling of roe, makes california such a love.
Grilled Pork Sushi ($1)
I found a strange love in nibbling the spring onions.
Zaru Shell Sushi ($0.75)
These took 3 repeated orders to get it right. Zaru Shellfish puts the jaws to a chewing test; I chewed till I nearly gave up amidst the tough texture.
Whole Sea Eel Sushi ($6)
The last to arrive and I'm glad it was served last. Lovely finish to the otherwise average meal. Unlike other grilled eels attempted at Japanese restaurants, this was less tough and sweeter. The sauce used was not the usual sticky dark sauce. Melt in your mouth, quite literally! I was amused by the puny ball of rice hidden somewhere beneath this mammoth sliver of eel.
Good not great sushi. Pricing-wise it sure does confuse the mind as the prices are issued by per piece rather than plate. The same way .99 cents works magic on the human mind.
