TWG @ Ion

Once you step into TWG, you are brought into a different world altogether. The warmth of the waiters are infectious, sincere or not, for the whole time at least, it felt real. Not quite experienced anywhere else, truth be told.

There is something about TWG that is alluring, the choice of tunes, the way the shelves stacked high with tea turn, the way the waiters warmly greet you...simply different. High tea at Peninsula felt Victorian, dining at TWG made me feel like Disneyland...as if I needed a snow white gown to complete the experience. Weird enough, though I was physically in town, it just felt otherwise.

The place is mad packed with tables so butt-close to another's, making movement out of your seat embarrassing.

I have a thing or two about food from trolleys, somewhat old fashioned...somewhat oddly attractive.

Tattered menus..

Gave their famous teas a miss..

Scratchy silverware..

Their much acclaimed macarons.

Grand Wedding Tea, Passionfruit and Coconut ($2)
1837 Black Tea and Black Currant ($2)

Both boasted a light crisp sugar shell, so easily crumbled with a jam-like center. Credit given to their fine artistry of combining so many flavours and creating a harmonious dessert. Not too huge a fan of their macarons though.

Apple Tart ($8.50)

It was a toss up between the apple tart and apple crumble, as much similar as they sound and look, the waiter made a distinction for me, apple crumble had chocolate, the tart did not. Topped with finely sliced apples, solid chewy pastry and almond filling with occasional raspberries. I was immediately sold. The flavours that played in the mouth were delightful and I have to mention how delicious the pastry base is! Neither flaky nor crumbly, crispy light layers.

Chocolate Caramel Cake ($8.50)

The original intended choice of Chocolate fondant was sold out shortly after 1pm, much to the chocoaddict's sheer disappointment. The waiter was awfully apologetic and tried to allay your disappointment with "the rest taste so much better". The top layer of wobbly caramel jell-o, raspberries and dense chocolate for the bottom. Once again, I was impressed by the clever use of raspberries, to break away from all the sugar load with a slight sour twang.

Sincerity was what I felt of their service, I walked out happy and already noting the next dessert to have.
